everyone and their mother talks about SHTF ammo/gun this and SHTF ammo/gun that. i want to know if anyone firsthandedly had to use their weapon in a real SHTF scenario(i.e. Hurricane Katrina). does anyone have any articles of a person using his/her weapon in a SHTF scenario? now dont get me wrong, I am prepared to protect myself and family in a SHTF moment, I am prepared for the worst, but i hope for the best. but in reality has it ever happend? |

South Central Riots ETA - No, I wasn't there, so it may not meet the "1st hand" criteria you request. But it's an example. IIRCso was the Loma Prieta quake. I had a customer who was originally from CA who worked for the DOJ and she said that there was a significant amount of looting in the first hours after the quake. |
+1, definately was SHTF. Not in the same way for me though, I was on the USS Iwo Jima moored downtown for the relief efforts. We got there a few hours after Katrina went through. Heard/saw enough for me though =\ When guys from the 82nd/10th Mountain (don't remember which it was) say they'd rather go back to Iraq than "do this shit" that should give you an idea how bad it was. |
Yeap, they were aiming and shooting. I dont think they were aiming for there tires either |
Check the Survival forum or the Louisiana forum for the thread. It has been a while since I read it. |
Funny you say that. I was watching a clip on those, and one thing that was mentioned was that within a year, most of those asian shop keepers were killed by the black gang members they tried to stop. Sweet justice eh? |
Think it was a s&w 76, not sure. |
|
I think for 99% of people SHTF is a way to mentally justify spending money on this hobby, when truth be told, it would be better spent on smoke alarms, side airbags, insurance policies, gym memberships, prostate exams, fresh produce etc. Now a CCW type scenario is way more likely, yet people always go on about how useless handguns are

If that last bit's supposed to be a joke, it ain't funny. |
IIRC there were no shots fired but it was close. The member is ShaneS and there are two threads in the SF of it. One is "listening to Katrina" it should link Shanes blog for all the details. ETA for links: Listening To Katrina Hurricane katrina, et.al, and LA Riots Survivor Question |
The case was written up by Ayoob in American Handgunner in the last few years. I'm 99% sure he had both an He ran one or the other dry and switched over both were definitely used in the shootout. ETA Linkage: www.afn.org/~guns/ayoob.html |
The member is ShaneS and he has posted the story in the Survival Forum. He also has an ongoing thread about his Katrina BLOG (an excellent read BTW). That story is not yet up on the Blog. |
I remember reading about that here and it was an AR- not FA M16, and the FA S&W. It was a good story. I don't think he killed them all. I recall the story saying he intentionally fired over their heads to scare them and emptied the AR at the car that was running straight at him. IIRC he had a shotty stashed as another back up to run to. I can't find the story yet. He was a gun shop owner and heard his alarm at the shop going off. Was it in FL? -JC -JC |
I recall being in Baton Rouge the day after Katrina. Gun stores were being burglarized and people were running around like animals. I volunteered my services (medical) at the River Center and witnessed the carnage first-hand. Missing limbs, blood everywhere.. bodies. Power was out for days. I witnessed APC's and helos patrolling the area. It was a moment when you really weren't sure what was going on. Cell phone towers gave priority to law enforcement/medical services; so needless to say I had no service to contact my parents. My HK USP45 went everywhere I went. I'm thankful for the Second without a doubt. |
Yea and he only loaded 15 or 18 rounds in 20rd AR mags....the 1970's - everyone was fucked up. |
ShaneS This is what he said:

Never needed to draw (thank the Lord), but I carried constantly while services (power, water, phone, etc.) were being restored after Isabelle went through Tidewater VA. And until the power was restored, I slept during the day and watched over my family at night. I still remember the cheering when the power came back and the a/c kicked in... |
| Anyone have a link to the guy who owns the 2.5 ton truck? He took his WWII era duce and a half from his home in TX and drove it to his friend's home in New Orleans. He delivered all kinds of supplies, used an overturned compact car as a plow to clear streets, got into one gunfight, and had all his perscriptions stolen when he was delivering food and water. It's an awsome read. |
I didn't know that the 82nd Airborne that were marching thru downtown were part of the LAANG. President sent in the active duty regular Army and the National Guard from lots of states to help get control of New Orleans. My unit from the Illinois Army National Guard went there. President could not send them in earlier, because the President has to wait until requested by state authorities according to law. The state Governor waited until the SHTF to call, and then it was too late for many. Use the internet and do a little research. |
i just read that entire article. all i can say is ...
|
I was there with the TXARNG. So were units from damn near every state, the 82nd Airborne and 1st Cavalry Division. I hardly saw any LAARNG troops. I was in the Algiers area and my unit was bivouacked at the Navy installation around Algiers Point, with the 82nd. |
Jesus Christ! What a badass!! |
My guess: DU troll. |
Are you Section |
Or sarcasm.

They were shooting people in the parking lots. They certainly fired them.
