ETA, our registration fee normally decreases with the age of the vehicle. I think it increased this time. |

I know SAE has put a 1 PSIG limit due to HDPE tank materials which are just about universal in all light vehicles. The problems start with the equipment because if the pressure regulator is NOT tested every time, there could be failures. Then we have the $8/hour grease monkey. I know there are a few lawyers who would be willing to sue CARB for mandating such tests without assuming liability. The REAL issue is all cars made after 1995 HAVE PRESSURE MONITORING EQUIPMENT incorporated into the evaporative emissions control equipment, making such tests USELESS. If the evaporative emissions control equipment is malfunctioning, it will throw a diagnostic trouble code which will enter into permanent memory AND ILLUMINATE THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP WHICH IS AN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION on CARB's inspection. If you need any help in getting a WAIVER to such inspections, the BEST SOLUTION is consult the service department of the brand's dealer. Do not take this lying down. I know in Texas, they only check the fuel tank cap. When I had my diesel inspected, it is EXEMPT from all evaporative tests because diesel's flash point is over 140 F. Gasoline has a flash point of -40 F or C, they are the same at -40. California, you need to shut this down. Only the dealer should touch this part of the system. Most cars will throw a DTC and subsequent MIL if the fuel tank cap is leaking. Enough |

Enough holy shit dude. you really do know everything. i just got through some terrible smog stuff here. my tacoma wouldnt pass smog with my cats, so i needed to replace them. but i guess as of 09 cali took all aftermarket/oem cats off the shelves so they could do some ''regulatory'' or somesuch bullshit to all cats in cali. so as a resident here i could not buy, in stores and online, my trucks catalytic converters. i called out of state places and no one would ship to me. without smog i cant register, without registration i cant drive, and if i cant drive i cant work. so my only option was to go through the dealer(convenient)and that would cost me 3,300 bucks. so what did i do? ill tell you i didnt go to the fucking dealer thats for sure. |

California is like a foreign country to us Okies. Cheaper than going to Europe and enough to remind us how not to do things. It took the Navy to get me out of my home state and much as I liked/loved San Diego for the 29 years I lived there I am reminded continually that making my post military permanent home in another state won't be such foul thing. |
