I am going to pass on some helpful info that was given to me by a member here. Add the Ghostery extension to your browser. I did this yesterday and have not seen a ad/spam link since.

I've had this happen before and I hate it.

Google Chrome sometimes highlights words and makes them links.

That's not arfcom-specific behavior. You've got malware of some sort.

Yeah, before it was Bing that added that crap. I don't remember how I got rid of it.

That's what my browser does. Arfcom didn't do this? I thought it was a revenue move. This is the only site where this happens.

That is weird.  When you quoted Subnet, there were links associated with some words and phrases like 'car insurance' and 'malware'.  However, others who quoted him do not have these links.  BTW, the links when I hover over them return to this page.

ETA: now there is something even more weird.  After posting, there are more links even to ones that did not have any before, and some of these go to suspicious places.  The original posts do not have them, only the ones in quotes.

This is a test within quotes.  I'm stating a few keywords in here:  Car insurance, malware, guns, ammo, news.

ETA #2.  The links do not show in my post, at least to me.

Malware, yeah maybe.  I'm not all computery and stuff so I don't know.  But, seems to affect a lot of users.  It's constant for me, there's a whole bunch of keywords, I think they mostly take you to site sponsors.

I've been playing banner ad roulette since yesterday, some ads auto-play, sometimes I get the same 2 ads and they both play at once

That's different than what the OP is describing. You're going to see ads (some obnoxious) as a non-paying member.
