I have never heard of that cartridge load.

And it would be SS109 for just the bullet.

So you're saying I fail?

I often see it listed as SS109/M885 so I figured they were just two designations of the same.

I thought it was M855/ss109

WRONG!

m885 uses a frangible super-magnet at its core.

Are those the heat seeking bullets used in the assault machine gun rifles with shoulder things that go up?

The inconsistent quality of surplus is the I generally don't use it. The only reason I have the *AHEM* SS109 bullets was because I got a good deal on them a few years back. Still haven't used much of them because they are the least consistent bullet I've ever seen. They make cheap range fodder though.

You're right though. I definitely should read it. My fail was proof of it.

M855 is the US designation of the cartridge loaded with the 62 grain steel/lead core bullet, just as M193 refers to the loading with the 55 gr FMJ bullet.

SS109 is the FN designation of the same cartridge.  It has a steel penetrator for the front half of the core, and lead in the rear half.

Maybe you should read it just to clear up any further things you dont understand and will look stupid talking about in the future.

At least the goal of the post was met. To be entertaining to ARFCOM.

It just happened to be another thread that didn't go the way the OP intended.

Also another reason to not drink and post. Firefox spell-check doesn't catch nomenclature errors.

M885 is a new experimental ammo that has a tiny Glock built into it so it explodes on impact. Seems to be having a 100% success rate.

I always get a laugh over these names

<tt><tt>Introducing, new for the two thousand and fifth rotation around the sun
since the death of an Isreali specs ops operator whom inspired the new
line of powder-propelled high velocity projectile assembelies for use in
equpment designed to interact with said assembelies in which to iniate
the reaction required to force the projectiles through a rifled steel
bore which imparts a spin on said projectiles thus stabilizing them in

5.56 Bi-metal Incendiary Tungsten Core Heavy Saboted Light Armor
Piercing Ammunition (BITCHSLAP)

This ammunition is strategicly engineered to Ignite a particular range
of comsumable items. It will not ignite gasoline, but will torch copies
of the Koran. The special incendiary compound we use is a proprietary
mixture engineered to only ignite when the firer wishes it to.

5.56 Anti-Sentry Supressed Tactical Arab Piercing (ASSTAP)

Integrally suppressed ammunition that does not require an external
sound moderating device. Has the capability engaging targets out to 690
yards with minimal sound and flash signatures. 3900 FPS of pelvis
busting power.

.45 acp APAP (Alchemy Powered Armor Piercing)

Once fired this ammunition gathers lead from the surrounding atmosphere
and draws it in to instantly create 1-1/4 oz of lead shot surrounded by
a field similar to that created by a light saber. this field allows the
ammunition to cut through hard objects, such as body armor, but still
create a devastating wound in soft tissue.

7.62 nato APITHPFMJBTLSTBTM (Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer Hollow
Point Full Metal Jacket Ballistic Tip Lead Soft Point Boat Tail Match)

Combining years of knowledge and expertice in the realm of completely
ignoring the laws of physics we now introduce the latest and greatest
development of our time. this round is the most accurate, powerful, and
devastating ammunition ever created. Based on the 88mm German tank
Killer, we downsized that cartridge using modern miniturization
techniques producing, without a doubt, the finest short barrel subgun
ammunition on the market

This is how SS109 projectiles can be very inconsistent....look at the bottom left group.

That group would have been <1moa, but the fifth round hit almost 2" away from the others!

I like having M855 because its cool to punch holes in things my other rounds cannot!

It's less consistent than commercial bullets. There's considerably more variations of weight from bullet to bullet. I didn't say it's not capable of good accuracy but it's still not as consistent as commercial.

Was your gun in a vise when you shot these groups?
6/24/2010 10:48:10 PM EDT

I was prone shooting with a bipod. The group on the top right with the V-max was the first 5 shots of the day, the PMC and PPU groups were the last shots of the day, this wasn't the only target that was shot at with the rifle.
