After reading the thread about the SUV's dying. And after having a argument at work about this subject. I didn't want to hijack the other thread so here we go.  I want to ask everyone on arfcom this question.

I am thinking it is sort of like the north vs south. Or when you ask someone for a coke in some places you get a coke or just a soda. Or better yet a pop vs soda.

So what exactly are you asking????

In Atlanta you ask for a Coke, and you get a Coke 9 times out of 10, or they say is a Pepsi OK?  Where you roll your eyes, sigh, and ask for a sweet tea.

Nuts, didn't see the poll... *DOH!*

SUV is a Blazer, Trooper, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Suburban, etc.

A truck has a bed (maybe a box, but most non-commercial trucks have beds)

SUV's ...........are very useful up here......snow, mud , hills and that stuff.....................I am not saying some people do not buy them for that status symbol...but for me it is a safety, get home up the hill issue..............even front wheel drive don't mean shit, when you have 8 inches of snow on the road and they have not plowed yet!!!!

Well I started this thread about is a SUV a Truck. But since you asked I would say if I asked for a coke, I want a coke. But to me I all lump them all together and call them pop.

You should trade it in on a Prius, so you can just pick it up and carry it past the icy parts.

See I am thinking this is going to be a north vs south thing. People in the South are going to say its a SUV. But people in the North are going to say its a truck. Thats what I run into at work anyways.

I'd say Soda if I was being generic about it.  I usually offer what I have "you want a coke?" or "you want a diet coke?"
If I ask for a soda and someone hands me something like an RC Cola I might throw up just a little.

Most SUVs are built on a truck's frame (ex - F250 & Excursion)...

I live in Atlanta, I wouldn't yell at anyone for calling their SUV a truck, but I wouldn't call a pickup an SUV.

Station Wagon with truck tires.

Most of the larger SUVs were built on a truck chais, so you can say those are trucks. A"truck" usually has a certain look to it...the pickup truck with a bed, maybe  a crew cab.....so other than the manufacturing similarity of the chasis, you can't say its a "truck".

An SUV is a truck if it has a frame like a truck.  Things like Excursions, Expeditions, Explorers, Tahoes, Suburbans, 4runners etc.

An SUV is a car if it has no frame like a truck.  Things like Toyota Highlanders, Rav4s, Hyundai Tucsons, SantaFes etc.

Truck.

They may be smaller than full-sized trucks, but they're still trucks.

Depends. If the SUV is built on a truck chassis, it's a truck (Suburban, Tahoe, Bronco, Blazer, etc.) If you are talking about a RAV4 or something like that, you are not talking about a truck.

A pickup truck is a kind of truck, not the entire catagory of truck.

I have the Saturn Vue, built on a car frame.

I don't consider it a truck.

I've never called them trucks.  And after noticing that "thugs" call SUV's "Trucks"("dem Cadillac trucks, ya know?") I knew I never would.
12/24/2008 8:22:08 AM EDT
[#21]
It depends.

I would refer to a Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Excursion, etc as a truck because they are basically truck derivatives.

Something like a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, etc are SUVs as they are not truck derivatives.

And then you get to the Acura MDX, Mercedes ML, BMW X series, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Lexus R series, etc that are essentially mini-vans and station wagons on steroids.

This. More and more SUVs coming out lack a low range and usually have poor independent suspensions that don't do as wellas a good ol solid axle for hairy situations.

Good for picking up groceries though. JMHO.

An SUV is a truck with a station wagon sitting on top of it's frame -  You get the power and towing of a truck, and the passenger space and internal space of a station wagon.

Some of them are exactly that!

I miss the days of the old Broncos and Blazers. Those things were functional!
Nowadays what you get is a bunch of faggy leather and fancy plastic...
Lord help you if you try to slap a plow on the shit.

What glazer1972 said:  depends what kind of chassis they're built on.

A Tahoe is a Silverado, damn near down to the wiring harnesses.  At least my mid-90s one is.

I think a Nissan Armada and Titan share a chassis platform (I could be wrong about that though).

Not sure if Ford shares a frame between the trucks and the SUVs but I'd be surprised if they went to the expense of manufacturing two different items for th

4Runners and HiLuxes (you all know them as Tacomas) are damn near identical.

Basically, if it has a ladder frame, it's a truck with a permanently mounted camper top.

Yes, I want a functional, utilitarian, get the job done type of vehicle, similiar to the old VW Thing.

I used to think they were very stupid till we bought one.  Granted we still have a truck, but having that much enclosed space and 4 seats with a 4wd truck chassis is pretty super.

A Tahoe, Silverado, Yukon, and Sierra are the ON THE SAME PLATFORM.

Don't tell me an SUV isn't a truck –– it's just a different body on said truck.

Oh yeah, do this in a Rav4 (small pic, I know, sorry)

I love the old Broncos.

To answer the question of the OP it depends on the SUV in question. A Tahoe or Expedition is a truck. A Toyota RAV4 or Ford Escape is a AWD car with a tall body.

Wow, I never heard of these VWs before, the VW Iltis 4X4.

If GM or Ford made something like this in a hard top, I would buy one.

Keep it very basic / military style inside, keep it cheap, not another Hummer type deal.

The SUV is no more going to die than the hammer.
It's a tool and it's useful,that story sucked

Anyway,it's in the truck family

TRUCK:
A motor vehicle carrying its load on its own wheels and primarily designed for the transportation of goods or cargo. A truck is similar to a passenger car in many basic aspects, but truck construction is usually heavier throughout with strengthened chassis and suspension, and lower transmission and drive-axle ratios to cope with hilly terrain

I thought the term SUV was reserved for the media to use when trying to sell the hype? Usually they will label any vehicle an SUV if it makes it sound bad and they go out of their way to do it.

Some are and some are not.  I have a Ford Explorer Sport Trac; it has a four door cab and a short 5' cargo bed.  I call it a truck but Ford says SUV.
