OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha Marine died in Iraq on the same day his wife gave birth.

Shane Kielion

Corporal Shane Kielion, 23, was killed in action Monday. His wife, April, gave birth to a son Monday, too.

Kielion was a 1999 graduate of Omaha South High School. He played quarterback on the school’s football team. He wore No. 1 and was the team captain.

"He was very proud of the things he accomplished," said South football coach Jay Ball. "Very proud of where he came from. Very proud of this school."

After high school, Shane married his high school sweetheart -- April -- and joined the Marine Corps.

"He wanted to make a difference. He was committed to the Marines, committed to his country, committed to his family," Ball said. "His last words to me were, 'Coach, I'm going back to Fallujah and I'm gonna kick some ass.'"

Kielion's son was born just hours after he died.

"You talk about the ultimate high and the ultimate low -- I think about the grandparents and her, the birth of her son and their grandson, and then this. It's the ultimate tragedy in my mind. It can't get any worse than that," Ball said.

Ball said it was very somber at Omaha South Tuesday. Many of the teachers remember Kielion. A memorial for him was created on the school's Web site.

Kielion's family was not ready to talk yet Tuesday.

Ball said that for now, South High is just trying to be there to support the Marine's family, but it does want to have some kind event in the future.

So sad.  The kid has an honorable man for a father.
