WIthout looking up in a dictionary....Whats the difference between a rainforest and a jungle?

I would guess it has something to do with the total amount of rainfall for a particular region over a given year.

You can't play cards in the jungle

Too many cheetahs!

Dunno.

We have rain forests in the US, they are hardwood type forests.  Forget the name for this lol

Temperate Rain Forest is what I was trying to think of.

IIRC...

A rainforest is a specific ecosystem which requires the development of the canopy.  It's basically old-growth jungle.

Jungle is just any intra-tropical place with lots of trees.

Would be surprised how many people don't know there is in fact rain forest in the smoky mountains.

I didn't know.  I thought people were joking by talking about it being a rain forest, making fun of how much rain we get.  Sure enough, I moved to a fucking rain forest. lol

ETA:  I don't know the difference either.  When I think of jungle I think of smaller, softer wood growth.  Lots of snakes and big cats.

Well, the primary difference is how they are spelled...

If I remember right, a jungle is a type of rainforest that's hot.

Latitude?

Somehow, I think of jungles as being fairly close to the equator, while rain forests are scattered throughout the world.  Also, a jungle implies, to me, more low growth plants while the forest implies taller trees and too much shade for low growing plants to develop.

The canopy development posted above does make sense in this regard.

Yup, a jungle is a hot and sticky rain forest.  Places like Washington state have temperate rainforests.

Only problem with the canopy idea is areas of temperate rain forest.  Around here it's just like regular old woodlands but with lots of rain.  Some things are different obviously such as thicker undergrowth, seemingly more vines(tons of poison ivy) and other things like that.  Can't say much for the canopy though.

Of course a lot of the stuff here is logged, not much old growth.

There are some WMAs around here that aren't logged and come to think of it, I've never really thought about the whole more developed canopy thing.  I'll have to pay more attention on my next trip out there.

Jungle you need a body cam.

"Jungle rain forest" = "tropical rain forest", which are found in the tropical and equatorial regions of South America, Africa, southern Asia and northern Australia.

The rain forests in North America like the Smokey Mountains and Pacific Northwest & British Columbia are temperate rain forests found north of the tropics.
