When I moved into my current house, the previous owners had burned lots of pine in the fireplace and the house had/has a steel chimney cap. The pine left what looks like cresote and the cap left rust on all sides of the chimney. Some of the rust has run down onto the shingles. I am about to add on to the house and put a metal roof on it. I would very much like to clean up the chimney and replace the chimney cap with a copper or stainless one. My question is this. If I rent a sandblaster, can I safely remove the rust from the brick and mortar without removing too much of the mortar? Anyone done this before? I've talked to my chimney sweep and he really has no suggestions and I have had little luck finding information about this on the internet. There always seems to be an expert in Arfcom on everything. |

muratic acid and stiff bristle brush. dont get any on you. a good hardware store will have it, its for cleaning brick and concrete. I would not recommend the sand blaster, it'll eat the surface of the brick off, just like a pressure washer. If your is brick is colored at all, like he chaulky white on the surface, any method will eat it off, i've seen that type ruined by washing. |
