I noticed when I lived in the south many did not understand Sarcasm.
Sarcasm is extremely common here (in NY), sometimes to the point you have to ask if the person is serious or being sarcastic since many can do it with such a straight face. Sarcasm just a Yankee thing? |

I disagree, OP. I think way too many people who attempt to be sarcastic don't understand the concept. It's like irony, the concept has completely been lost to the average person. Claiming you're being sarcastic is not an excuse for being a jackass. I see people all the time making a stupid/douchebag statement and then when they get called on it, they claim it was sarcasm. It happens a lot on this forum.
Example: Poster A: My mom just died. Poster B: Haha. Your mom is dead, and she's rotting in Hell. Poster A: You're a douchebag for saying that. Poster B: Recalibrate your sarcasm meter. I was totally being sarcastic. Same goes for real life. People think any rude or hateful comment is just sarcasm, and it's not. There is plenty of sarcasm is the south, we're just not douchebags on a regular basis. |

Southerners just aren't as rude. It's there, but more subtle. |

I was living in the south and watching some show (cooking channel thing) on the show a woman was shopping in a Market in NY and asked if a piece of produce was fresh the shop keeper replied "I would not put it out if it was not fresh". As funny as it sounds it was that one thing that made me miss "Home" (NY) I realized that I understood the people in NY and they understood me. When I lived in the south I would offend people simply because i was trying to get a job done and did not have time to play nice nice when I just did not have time to waste. |

Of course we understand sarcasm. It's your accent we can't understand. I never thought I had an accent until I was in the south When we lived in CA, my wife was in class and her professor would have her stand in front of the class and say various words so the other students could hear the various vowel sounds (I guess we have more spoken vowel sounds here). |

Sarcasm is alive and well in the mid-west. I have master-level sarcasm. It keeps people on their toes. *The above is not being sarcastic. Sarcasm and subtlety are an artform where the speaker says their piece, and then gets out of the way before the audience has time to digest what was said. |

Yes, worst is when you have to explain it. My dad was in the hospital, and being a smart ass (dad was a big time joker) They almost called in shrink a until we told him to fess up to the nurse that he was just joking around (he was bored and tired of answering the same questions) |

I don't know what art of the South you were in but around here, people wouldn't say a word to and let you go ahead label yourself. In other words, let you stand out like a sore thumb. And you wouldn't get a rise out of anyone unless you insulted their wife or kids... then you would probably say that we are mean bastards for what happens next. Seriously, if I got your meaning right, I wouldn't even respond to you, just keep doing what I am doing. We're just turning our backs on you and carry on. |

Not being a smart ass but can you translate that? |

We have a local habit of "backwards talk", which is saying something with a particular (and rather specific) inflection so as to mean the exact opposite of the words. "Boy, she's poor lookin'" It's quite hard to to describe the way it's spoken with italics, but it means the opposite ("That particular specimen of the distaff side of humanity is rather fetching"). "Are you going to Gordon's?" "I am." ("Hell no I'm not going, and you're an idiot for asking"). |

(as they are grabbing a side to help). I have a guy here at work who tells me to "Fuck Off" every morning (His way of saying Good Morning) |

I lived in NYC for a while and now I'm back home in MN. We have what is called Passive Agressive Minnesota Nice. We have a tendency to not say anything if something is wrong. I miss that about New York, you could just say what was on your mind. I was at a Burger King in the Twin Cities and waiting in line. There was a 18 year old girl and guy kissing in the line. All of us just stood there including the cashier. All of the sudden this 5 foot 2 West Indian looking woman in a Brooklyn Dodgers jacket says "Excuse me, I think she's ready to take yo owe-dah.". I thought, yup, no way she's from anywhere but Brooklyn. All us quiet white folks were happy she said something. People think New Yorkers are rude. I always found most New Yorkers are assertive and much more friendly then MN nice. |

If you live in a fast paced environment you need to speak up or get passed over. |
