That valley has several trails for hikers, but it also is known for lots of animal activity, especially in the warmer months.
Elk and grizzlies spend the warmer months in this area feeding and raising their young. Encounters with grizzlies are not uncommon and often the trails are flagged or closed if human/grizzly encounters are too frequent or maulings occur. I've been to Yellowstone several times, but only along the paved route with my family. I believe that was years before buffalo were introduced, where you can commonly find them in the northern region between the Mammoth area and the north entrance. My wife and I were there a month before the fires that decimated alot of the park in 1988. We stopped near a small fall on the way to the south entrance to take some pictures. There were alot of fallen lodge pole pines as we hiked the short distance to the creek. I commented about all the potential for a fire with all the downed timber. The last time I was there was late spring 1993 coming back from a sisters college graduation and had plenty of free time to at least spend a few hours there. The area near those falls had been decimated, but there was alot of new understory growth. I'd like to see current photos of that area, as well as any from the south entrance to the Old Faithful region. |
