I drove freight trains for 25 years, that's one of the nightmare come true scenarios we have. FWIW not necessarily with school buses, EVERY DAY I was working some ass hole would run the crossing gates trying to beat the train, that's EVERY DAY. We will not even talk about people walking along the tracks. |

| There's a wash not far from our house. The road through it is paved, but after a heavy rain, it fills with water. A few years ago, I was coming home from work and the wash was flooded. Not really bad, but enough for me not to attempt to drive through. I turned around and there was a school bus with kids on board coming. The driver stopped and asked me if I thought it was safe enough for him to drive through. I told him that I didn't think so, but I was not the one with a bus full of kids who would have to answer for any consequences. He turned around and went the long way. |

We will not even talk about people walking along the tracks. My friend was a brakeman for CSX for years, and the number of stories of idiots trying to beat trains was incredible. One drunk girl missed the railroad crossing and got stuck on the tracks. Fortunately for her, two guys pulled her out of the car before the train hit it. They had to bring an engine from the opposite direction to pull the car out from under their engine. By then, he had timed out and they sent a relief crew. Never a dull moment! |
I can confirm she has been relieved of duty. Unfortunately bus drivers are a hot commodity here in this area. The job pays crap and the pool of drivers that are willing to do it are all, let's say, well past there prime. It is Florida where the average age is dead.

His route was easy, but he hated the way it broke the day up. He said if you had a Dr. appointment, you only had until around 2:00 or so before you had to get ready to go to the school. He said it was OK if you had nothing else to do, but he only did it one year. My friend's late sister-in-law was a driver, and they were supposed to walk the bus at the end of the day to make sure no kids were left on it. One day she didn't, and there was a little kid left on the bus, asleep in the back. She got a phone call that night, notifying her that she was no longer employed with the bus company. What a screw-up she was! |
