Go R4, R8, or wait for the R9. The 4/8 have the same range the 4 just lacks directional arrows. Uniden had jamming extensions as well as ones that moved the detecting to where you want on bumpers etc. They also teased the Bluetooth capabilities of all 3 that should open up soon. The R9 will just be a small device for running the extensions and ofcourse ux. Skip R7/3/etcs cause their detection isn't up there. Run Waze on Android/Apple Auto, always keep your head up, and learn which departments typically run what and why.

I've been using a Uniden R3 for a while.  The firmware and database updates keep improving things.  Doesn't have directional signal detection, but it does let you know how many different signals it sees.  I also have the DFR8, which is a lot cheaper, similar'ish detection range, but no GPS.

The R3's OLED display has some burn in, but other than that, it's been good.

It's funny how in the detector world, what's old is new again.

I used to run the original Escort, with the analog meter, and the amber incandescent light bulb, and the Escort Solo 9V battery detector, and learned that you don't need arrows to figure out where RADAR sources are coming from.

Except for range, the R8 seems to be the best of the high end detectors.
Bluetooth still doesn't work, but for someone not planning on running apps, it would be a small issue.

If someone is just starting off, I'd still recommend the DS-1, but if you have money to burn, get anything you want.

Says the radar detector owner from 20 years ago. The top models all have GPS systems built into them. Mine automatically puts a signal into silence if it sees it across three times or I push on a button.

When my detector goes off I also know what a good area to run radar and where it's not.

Waze works where there are people. I don't like people so I live where Waze doesn't work, or DoorDash/Uber/Lyft. But on the positive side old people aren't being beaten to death by a pack of 7 or 8 pre-teens very often out here.

The officers that run radar out here do it in the transition points where the highway's 65 mph drops to 25 mph as the road leads through the center of a 125 year old downtown village of a couple thousand people. They flip their radar gun on and it runs constantly. The natural hills and vegetation absorb plenty of the signal but I start catching beeps in plenty of time to mind my speedo and make an adjustment if needed. When there's no traffic on the road I often drive the road rather than the speed limit.

Waze and radar detectors are only effective against most officers. The only two things that are effective against all officers is either being a cop or a democrat politician.

LOL. All I had to do to defeat radar detectors was leave it in stand-by. See, those microwaves go a lot farther than the radar can "see" so if the officer leaves the unit always transmitting, those with detectors will get the alert before the officer's unit "sees" them. Make sense? LIDAR is more popular these days but I hear there are detectors for those too.

Fun story;
This occurred around 1980-something. Working weekend nights. Mostly kinda-sorta rural area in between town so most people felt comfy doing the Goober on Gilly Walker's car - speedspeedspeed LOL. Had me a right nice fishing hole along a nice gradual curve. Like fish in a barrel. Then one night my hole went dry. And the next night too. And the next. Then I stopped a guy who, in the curve I visually estimated his speed at 75 plus before he rounded the curve's apex then he hit the brakes. Best speed I got for him was 55 in the 55 (by radar LOL) Close enough, right? Stopped him, did all the nice little introductions, got his license and such and then asked what kind of radar detector he had. "Don't have one, but I jammed the brakes when the star on your door lit up." I shined my light back at my car and immediately saw what he meant. I'd recently traded my mile'd out 1985 Caprice for a shiny new 1987...which had the "new" reflectorized insignia. Bastages.
A bath towel and some refrigerator magnets fixed that shit most ricky-tik. And, glory be, my stats went back up. Not that we had quotas....we could write as many as we wanted to!

No. You'll get no 'stay in the speed limit, cheaper' blahblahblah from me. Free Country, man. Drive like you want. Faster crashes harder. Then you become some other cop's problem because patrol don't do no fatal crashes paperwork. Call VCU. They do paper. Night night, Gracie !

Escort 360 here. If it's going off you better slow the fuck down.

Except iPhone face unlock LIDAR will set it off though. I have my iPhone automatically connect to it when I start my vehicle, so I also benefit from the internet based warnings that are crowdsourced from other Escort devices.

It’s just risk mitigation it’s not 100%

In over 60,000mi on that setup and I was stopped twice

One time for 92/55 it was instant on radar the police officer was more interested in all the gadgets then my speed and we talked for like a half hour and he let me go with a warning

One time for 48/45 but that may or may not have been for something that happened earlier I had the heads up on the scanners so I knew it was coming and I could have avoided it if I had reeeeaaaallllyyy wanted to but I said fuck it 2.5 hours on the side of the road and got off with a warning

I made lots of money selling and installing radar detectors. The ones that paid well were remote mounted Escorts. We would gut the device. Mount the sensor in the grill unobstructed, the rest in the dash. Charged lots of coin.
We voided the warranty of course.

The only problem with that is knowing what the speed limit is.

Here they build schools on land they get check outside of town on a state road.
Speed limit is 55 except
"During restricted hours" So when the hell is that?
"When children are present" Not even sure what or when that means.
Then this one is 55 except during - Super tiny text impossible to read with hours listed. I actually stopped in middle or road one day so I could read it.

None of those schools have flashing lights, you just have to guess. I add 2 miles to my 25 mile daily drive to avoid all of them.

Glad I could provide a useful respond.

The app for JBV1 and Waze are free...so $499 for new V1 Gen2.  My V1 Gen1 became useless due to all the blind spot and adaptive cruise radars.  With it 90% of the alerts were bogus.  That is mostly solved with the Gen2.   I believe I could have upgraded it for $399 and decided to spend the extra hundred to the get the newest tech.

I also have a 10" 4G tablet mounted to my dash which runs the JBV1, when I run it.  Usually I just have Waze up.  I believe with the JBV1 app you can also GPS block specific signals but I have not bothered with it.  The JBV1 integration with Waze is nice in remote areas but where there is a lot police activity it becomes very annoying as it announced every police icon ahead.  If the cops are busy and there are 4 different cop icons on Waze it announces each one, twice, along with the location, time, and thumbs up count.

Waze is a good tool but it didn't show any police on my highway drive this morning.  My R7 started alerting on Ka band about a threat behind me, I immediately dropped my speed and the cop eventually came into view as I exited.  Came back through town 15 mins later (different road) and the R7 starts going off about a Ka threat ahead.  Waze shows nothing but I pass the same cop (small town) parked and running radar.

K band can get noisy but a good modern detector can help you narrow out the false positives.  My only complaint about the R7 is that you can store GPS coordinates for false positives, but then it notifies you when you approach the coordinates every single time.

I have run a cheap Whistler w/Laser for a long time.  OSHP would set up traps along my work route on occasion and use laser guns.  It would work really well a few miles out.  Otherwise it just chirps with false warnings.

Now I use Waze but still have the Whistler on.  I have not heard the laser warning in a long time.  I know it still works, because if you drive near the airport they have a constant laser on for something that will always set it off.

I have a Uniden R7 and a pretty quick Acura.  I use the R7 with Waze via Apple CarPlay every time I turn on the ignition.  I have had some insane detection distances both on the open road and on more local roads I’m talking 3miles on local roads and like 5 miles on open highway.  The R7 has a 0.3 second instant on radar detection time which is absurdly fast and almost fast enough to prevent you from getting a ticket.  The R7 is basically immune to RDD technology and is user programmable to an absurd degree.  It was saved me from quite a few interactions with cops as you can see I live in Ohio where the police are absolutely obsessed with writing speeding tickets for ten over violations like their entire retirement depends on it.

Valentine and Waze. Both at the same time on highway.
Just detector in town.

Waze is completely dependent on the input from others. A recent trip had the detector alerting with zero coming from Waze. Sure enough 2 separate times fHP was up in the weeds with no alert from Waze.
I have noticed that sometimes with light traffic and light LE presence Waze users are somewhat lax in reporting. It is also possible that in both my instances above the FHP units recently arrived and just got set up before the notices started..?
Of course that happens in reverse more often..Waze alerting to LE with their radar units off. Just sitting. Sometimes for a road crew. I slow for both.

Reasons to run both.
