Why don't they have those airport scanners at all schools? School violence is certainly a problem, not just with guns, but knives as well. Kids also routinely bring drugs onto campus.
So, why aren't we irradiating children everyday in the name of safety? |

Don't be giving them more wonderful ideas........ Obviously this a bit of a devil's advocate approach. I'm still trying to understand why airports take such dramatic precedence. Why not outfit every subway station and bus stop in NYC with these scanners? |

Don't be giving them more wonderful ideas........ I took a survey on school safety once. I asked the students if they agreed with the 'no knives' policy, for their own safety. 80% agreed. I then asked how many of them had ever been stabbed by a knife, either at home, or in school. 1-2 raised their hands. I followed by asking them how many had been stabbed by a pencil. Almost all of them raised their hands. I then asked why we were not afraid of pencils more than knives. Lead to some interesting, eye-opening discussions about perception and reality in regards to policies that 'make us all safer.' TRG |

Why not outfit every subway station and bus stop in NYC with these scanners? The problem with the scanner is the Federal control over private enterprise. If American Airlines wants to buy the scanners and offer them to their customers, then fine, let the customers decide. However, that is not what is happening. It reminds me of the parable of the child who loved the puppy so much, they hugged it harder and harder, eventually killing the puppy. That is what the TSA is doing, without the love part. TRG |

Practical answer: Because it would cause enough of a problem that there'd be even less education going on.
But then again, we have those stupid "zero tolerance" policies. You know, the ones that lead to a kid getting suspended over the gun on a little plastic action figure, or an honor student getting expelled for having a knife on her keychain. Oh, wait, that was her parent's keychain and she didn't even realize that there was a knife with a 1" or 2" blade on it because she rarely drove her parent's car. It was one of those deals where it doesn't look like a knife until the blade is exposed. The school district ended up paying for that one, to the tune of $100,000. My personal favorite, however, was the middle school girl getting strip searched because another student said that she had Ibuprofen on her, even though she didn't. It's a hard drug, you know. Dangerous too, with it's LD50 of 636mg/kg. Fortunately, the SCOTUS said no on that one. But, hey, NO MISTAKES ALLOWED kiddos. Zero. Zip. Nada. We're going to make everything absolutely 100% safe no matter how stupid we have to get! |

TRG The problem with the scanner is the federal government violating my 4th amendment rights. Nudie-scans and grope fests are unreasonable searches for individuals whose only actions are carrying a suitcase to travel. |
