I noticed that the cans of peanuts I buy advertise sea salt.

Is it better for you than regular salt? Why the change?

Dosen't sound Kosher to me.

No. It contains Mercury.

Doesn't all salt come from the ocean at one time?  Just that sea salt might have newer fish poop in it?

Just gives your nuts that fishy smell, in case you ain't been getting any lately...

because of how its commonly used, sea salt often does not contain iodine. That makes it taste quite a bit better, but of course now your not getting iodine which your body needs.

Not true. Same amount of sodium. The difference is that sea salt has some trace minerals that have been processed out of table salt, and table salt has more iodine. There is not really a health benefit of sea salt over table salt.

Sodium chloride is sodium chloride--the whole "sea salt" thing is just a fad, though it tends to be ground a little coarser which is nice for some applications.  The lack of iodine is not good, but you probably get enough of it in other sources of salt, as it doesn't take much.

I dunno, I guess that's subjective. Salt tastes like salt to me. Too much and it has that burning kind of feeling, at that point it doesn't taste like anything but burning (ala Raphie from The Simpsons ). I think most of the sea salt stuff is a fad, and marketing. Gram for gram, all salt has the same amount of sodium in it. The only way Kosher or sea salt has "less" salt is if measured by volume. At which point it's the size of the grains that makes one type have "more" or "less" salt than the other. Usually the Kosher or sea salt are larger grains than regular table salt.

How would sea salt even have less sodium?  You can't have salt without one sodium ion and one chlorine ion.

I'm pretty sure that most of us get plenty of iodine from the salt in all the prepared, processed foods we eat.

I like sea salt for finish. the crunchy burst of flavor it adds to a steak is great. You can get different salts with different flavors too. Check out the Spice Lab on Amazon, I have some of the Viking oak smoked sea salt.

ALL of the salt in the world came from various seas. Some of the seas dried up millions of years ago. You can evaporate sea water and make salt, but it's moronically pointless., since mined salt is vastly less expensive.

Sodium chloride is sodium chloride. There are other minerals dissolved in sea water. They can change the taste of salt SLIGHTLY. People who rave on about 'pure sea salt' are generally yuppie idiots. It just cracks me up when these idiots say 'sea salt' is 'better' for you than 'refined' salt. So many idiots in the world.

I've seen  tan or BROWN 'sea salt'. That just means it has lots of impurities in it.

Buy salt in the blue canister. When it rains, it pours. It's fucking sodium chloride. Deal with it.

Morton Iodized table salt contains sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, dextrose and potassium iodide.

Sea salt contains no anti-caking agents or added potassium iodide but other minerals

Table salt is 99.9 percent pure

Sea salt is 98.0% pure.

Whatever you like.

Simple: other non-sodium salts, primarily Potassium.

Also, there is a taste difference due to just how the crystals dissolve.  I'm trying to think of a good example but there are some foods that taste better with crystal types that aren't like the ones in standard "table" salt.

UTAH...It's mined in central Utah from what used to be the south end of Lake Bonneville. You disapprove of our fine GUN-LOVING heavily conservative state?

ETA: Yes, there is a huge difference in this salt compared to table salt.
