I was given a Sears 3000 Watt generator today, and was told it wouldn't start. Sucker has to be at least 30 years old..

Anyways, anyone have a guide on tearing one of these things apart and troubleshooting any problems? Model number is 580.56030.

Assuming the magneto is still producing spark, probably the most common problem is caused by neglecting to drain all the gas out of the tank (and carb float bowl) before putting the generator up for storage. After a year of so, the gas turns to varnish.

In some cases, you can fix it by merely removing the float bowl and cleaning it with carb cleaner spray. In more stubborn cases, you may need to completely disassemble the carb to clean any small fuel and air orfices.
