Friend of mine is all bummed out and upset. He is a senior in HS on the wrestling team. Turns out his head coach got clipped for possession of a needle with heroin, and DUI of drugs in February. Apparently the dude also got busted in September for at least possession. But due to the fact he has a family member who is an assistant DA somehow it never showed up in the local papers and the district who employs him as an elementary school gym teacher and coach never found out. Now my friend swears up and down left and right that this guy is awesome, a good guy, he was never unprofessional while he was at work, and people are trying to smear his name. From what I can piece together a fellow teacher dropped the dime on him to the school this second time because the school yet again had no idea of his arrest.

Now I MIGHT give him a pass if it was just posession, but it happened twice, and this time he was driving while impared. We got in an argument because he said him and a few of his fellow team mates were going to protest in the coaches behalf and speak in his favor. I told him that the guy is a scumbag and he needs to get new role models. Who knows who he could have killed driving around while high. Am I taking crazy pills?

i always like to adhere to the adage "if it doesnt affect your work, do what you want"

its like the monica blewinsky scandal, if he still did his job(which is debateable in that case) why should the the employer care?

i understand that because he is around children there is a stigma following substance abusing teachers but heroin is not too far removed from prescription painkillers and was once legal.

They can protest all they want. The school board is not going to have a heroin user as a teacher. I'm sure there is a state law forbidding it.

Are you sure that your friend hasn't been getting anything from this coach?

Any extreme anger problems lately?

That's why I feel like I am taking crazy pills. I have known the kid for a number of years. If I had any hope in the youth of our country it's him. He's a good student, doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs, three sport athlete,  and overall one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He is also very modest. I think he really looked up to this dude cause the coach was a division one college athlete, school teacher, and very personable. I think he is realizing that this guy is full of crap and someone he admired is just a phony fraud and everything that he hates.

If you try to make this about which of you is right about the guy, you're just going to build a wall between you and your friend.

He's gotta work through it on his own.  In time, he will.

It sucks that this was his role model but it is a good chance for him to learn what happens when you throw your life away for something stupid.

No, you're right.

While the messenger doesn't invalidate the message, the fact of the matter is your off-duty performance and habits ARE a reflection of your on-duty life.  If you're in a role-model position, then what you do when you're off the clock directly affects your reputation and ability to do your job.  Teachers, cops, lawyers, judges, etc.  all have a responsibility to be clean at all times, since they are both setting an example and upholding the honor and reputation of not just their personal character and integrity, but their profession's as well.

Clinton's double-speak about personal vs. private life was just that, double-speak––in his position, there IS no private life.  But he's duped millions into thinking that they can be in a position where their reputation and character is a fundamental part of their job, yet be immoral and engage in illegal activity after hours.

Even for someone working late-nite minimum wage at Dominos, you can't separate the two.  If I know that you're willing to break the law about drugs, how do I know you're willing to respect the fact that the money in the till is mine and not yours?  It's called integrity, it's a requirement for functioning in society, and too many people have forgotten what it means.

this does not jibe with Arfcom GD logic.......

I agree....but there is a vast number of "intellectuals" in GD that seem to think otherwise
