Not sure if you've seen this movie or not but I rented it this week end and the kids and I just finished watching it.  Its a great movie - probably never get any Hollywood awards but well deserving my personal library.

Well they do shoot at several salesmen and take their shotguns fishing -- does that count?

Yes I am always behind the times.  I don't watch much TV but this time I got to pick the movie and its rare when the entire family can enjoy something together.

I really liked the part with the punks in the bar.  He kicks their butts royally and then takes them home, cleans them up, feeds them and sends them on their way better men.  Yup, pretty good stuff.

You know when you have a family like mine Husband 50 - I'm 40, eldest son 16, daughter 14 and youngest 6 who all sat through it an are talking about it this morning that you have something special.

I have been reluctant to see it because that kid from Sixth Sense is in it and looks like a little queer.

Loved the flick and have a copy.

Would have prefered the alternate ending but like both endings.

Loved the whole traveling salesman bit especially the corn.

I haven't heard of the prior movie but the kid in the movie is adorable and does a great job.  I wouldn't think he was queer at all in this movie.  In fact for a movie with no sex, no foul language, little violence [albeit a few sword fights, a bar fight and lots of fish and salesman shooting] it was very good.

short syonpsis:  coal miner's son is inspired by the succes of sputnik to build and launch his own amateur rockets.  a battle of wills ensues when the boy refuses to follow his father's footsteps in the mine, and instead focus on rocketry as a profession.

a very good movie about the perils of running down a dream.

saw secondhand lions on friday, and i thoroughly enjoyed it.  just about perfect.

thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.  I just got down watching the alternative ending [for 2nd hand lions] but I thought it was rather hokey, I like how they did it in the movie better.  Personally I would have wrote it differently myself but considering the screenplay the original was best.

From IMDB:

In 1950's mining town called Coalwood, Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. With that event, Homer becomes inspired to learn how to build rockets. With his friends and the local nerd, Homer sets to do just that by trial and a lot of error. Unfortunately, most of the town and especially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time. Only one teacher in the high school understands their efforts and lets them know that they could become contenders in the national science fair with college scholarships being the prize. Now the gang must learn to perfect their craft and overcome the many problems facing them as they shoot for the stars.

It's based on a true story and it's pretty good.  I liked Second Hand Lions better, but this one's not bad.
