Does anyone know of any 7.62mm/.308 Sniper weapons systems in current LEO use? I would also like to hear about any sub-calibres, but again semi-auto.

I am aware of

Oberland Arms
HK 417
Sig 550

Thanks in anticipation

Our team bought an Armalite to test but they weren't really impressed with the accuracy.  I expect it was stock related as they bought an off the shelf with a carbine type stock.

They were looking at the SASS style that the military is moving to but have decided instead on another bolt rifle.  Check knights armament super sass it looks like a nice system.

DPMS, especially one put together by GA Precision is pretty highly regarded.

I use a Springfield M14.  Not Springfield Armory, Inc., but an original M14 with match barrel and trigger.  It was born in 1959, on the first day of M14 production at the .gov armory.  Its slightly older brother is in the Springfield museum.

It's as accurate as a bolt gun out to 500 yards, longest range I've had it at.

It's old, it's bulky, it's fat, but I'm not concerned in the least with its function and accuracy.  Happy hunting.

Armalite here..... no real complaints heard except the bolt guns are more accurate at distance.

Our team is about to purchase a DPMS LR-308 with the 24 inch barrel.  It's going to mount a CounterSniperUSA with a LaRue Tactical mount.

I'll post an AAR once I get it to the sniper class.

Thanks for the input so far. More would be welcome. I believe bolt guns are more accurate at distance, but that's not generally an LEO requirement, distance that is, not accuracy

I went to the USAMU Sniper school (1978).  The M21 (NM M14 with ART Scope) was the Army's sniper rifle back then.   There were several cops that went through that school who's department used the M21.  Even the FBI sniper program started out sending their agents to the USAMU Sniper/Counter Sniper School using the M21.

Don't know who does not.  Although several Wyoming HP carry M-14s

Oh boy... you wanna see something impressive??  Check out POF-USA's semi auto .308's!!!!  Frank had a 16" .308 that was shooting 1/3" at 100.  I saw it with my very own eyes.  My next purchase will be a loaded POF-USA rifle.  I have an Armalite AR10A4 that shoots 3/4" at 100 and a Savage 10FP with Choate stock that can shoot 1/2".  Either way, the likely-hood of a Urban rifle operator having to shoot past 200 yards is kind of rare IMO.

A 1 MOA rifle at 100 yds is still a 1 MOA rifle at 800 yds.  If a bolt gun is more accurate at a distance, it will be more accurate up close and vise versa.

Nope,

Either it's the 700 or an AI...

Some departments in Wyoming do carry M-14/M1A as a patrol rifle.

We use Armalite AR15's with an 18" barrel and 55 gr. WBST.  I am very confident with it, but we lose velocity and energy the further out we get compared to the larger caliber bolt guns.  My rounds start to tumble around 700 yards, not that we will deploy or take shots out to that distance in our urban environment.

I have had made and seen very consistent hits out to 920 yds with a .223 AR platform.  We were shooting 77gr sierra matchking black hills ammo out of a 1:7.7 18" barrel.  Accuracy was not the issue, but rather making sure we could dial the dope and reading the wind were the biggest challenges.

I could only wish we had a larger selection in our ammunition.  For our 5.56/.223 we are limited to the WBST in 55 grain and the Federal Tactical Bonded in 62 grain for barriers.  Our entry weapons also use the WBST 55 grain and with the exception of the FTB 62 grain ammunition the rest of the departments patrol rifles use the 55 grain WBST.  The only authorized stuff we have.

Gotcha.  From reading the safety on / off thread I see that you are a large full time team, about identical in size to ours.  Do you guys employ any bolt or semi .308's or just the Armalites in .223?

We also employ AI AW's in .308.  Those use the 168 grain WBST or 168 Fed. Tactical Bonded in 168 grain.  Half our snipers carry the "mouse guns" the other half carry the bolt guns.

Do all snipers qualify on both types, or do you 'graduate' from one to the other?

If you deploy regularly with a partner you can cross qualify on their rifle.  We typically try and deploy a mouse gun with a bolt gun.  You don't necessarily graduate from one rifle to the other.  It is just a matter of what was available when you filled the vacancy.

So would a pair go out with a .223 and a .308 and the most suitable weapon deployed according to the circumstances of the job, the other becoming the spotter?

Seems like a good idea if your dept. has the resorces. Sometimes a .308 can be too much gun.

Correct...or you have both guns up while discecting a structure and each of you take a half utilizing the scopes for observation.
