HUGE UPDATE: This dog's actual owner has been found. I know some of the story, but not a lot. Of course we checked the dog for a chip, and called the number. Every effort was made to find the owner, but you will see why we couldn't. This is a service dog for a guy who was apparently in the military. He lives in NEW MEXICO. He went through what sounds like a bitter divorce, changed his number, and never updated the dog's chip. His ex-wife stole the dog from the dog sitter, and brought him across the country and dumped him. Hurt the dog to hurt the man. (I don't have enough ugly words for someone who would do this.) Finally a friend of the ex-wife told the guy what she did, and where the dog was. He is flying from New Mexico to Kentucky to get his dog. I apologize profusely to all who have helped push for a new home for this boy, and especially to @Amish_Bill who was looking at giving this dog a home with his mom (please apologize to your mom for us). We had no way to know and didn't want to leave this old boy alone in a shelter, but this is an unusual situation. I'm thrilled for the dog and his owner, and I thank you for your understanding. ETA: as I think more about it, I was out sick through the weekend and couldn't work at moving this forward, and I think maybe that was God, stopping us all from going farther, knowing the owner was searching for his dog all the way across the country. We just found out this morning, and now y'all know. Y'all, update the chip info for your animals. Original post below~~ Old Dogs Are truly the Best Dogs. They have nothing to prove. They know what is important. They show young pups how to behave and appreciate their people. I'm calling him Gandy. Short for Gandolf. Because he is an old soul. This guy was living outside in the cold with no food and no water in the -3* Christmas freeze. Animal Control took him and actually charged his owner with neglect. Now he is at the shelter in KY, waiting for the right person to come take him home and let him know, for the first time, what a warm bed and loving home feels like. Semper Fi is paying for all his vetting and to treat his ear infections.  This old boy needs a loving home where he can live his best life in his senior years. If you take him, you won't have him for long--GSD life expectancy is 9-13 years. He might decide to be your angel beyond the normal life expectancy. Or God might decide he needs this boy sooner. Only God and this boy know.  Anybody out there with love to give? And willing to take love in return?  He is good with other dogs. We can test him with cats. (We will if you need that.) Arfcom is the best place on the planet (and sometimes the worst place  ) But for dogs, we come through.Who can make a place for this boy, and welcome his love, in his senior years? Can you show him what real love is? If you are the one for him, we will bring him to you. No cost. The Arfcom transport network will get him to you. |

But not on any arfcom facebook groups. Also don't know any GSD facebook groups.  Clearly, I am not techy or facebook savvy.

Like if the shelter has a website with the listing? Edit, a large popular group would be German Shepherds of Tennessee. Would be an AWESOME place to start. Folks, please keep this post bumped until he finds a home. As I understand it, this dog is currently housed in the very shelter that Mark (Joker1) used to frequent to rescue the dogs that comprised SFDR. This would be a rare opportunity, for those that never had the chance, to act as his hands now that he no longer is able. A tribute to the man and validation that his good works continue long after his passing. As stated, SFDR will deliver to your door a vetted and healthy dog, I will backstop additional costs if needed. All that is required is an open heart and a desire to enhance the quality of your family's life while giving comfort and love to one of God's favored creatures. Duke |

With his age unknown, condition and brightness is likely a good indicator of vitality. He looks solid. I'm sitting next to my 12 year old GSD/LAB/MUTT/ who knows what else mix as I type this and can tell you that the fire is still burning brightly. He is no longer a puppy but remains a very capable dog with some of his best years ahead of him. I’ve posted this before but my guy this summer, on his 12th birthday.. lots of miles left in him. We got lady from Mark when she was 4. He looks alert and in good shape and would make a fine buddy for someone. |

I wish I could but while our Pit loves kids and cats she doesn’t play well with other dogs. We have adopted special needs dogs before, we adopted a retired Leader Dog, she was ten and a half per the school in Rochester. They said she might have another year to go, she lived a bit over five more years with us. Our Staffordshire was about three-three and a half when we adopted her,,she lived another twelve and a half years. Growing up we always had GSD’s. If I could I’d be on the way for this boy right now! |

How are his hips? Can he still move, or am I gonna have to carry him outside? How does he do by himself in a house? Housebroken? Chewer? Wife and I are tentatively interested - our last elderly rescue GSD slept all day while we were at work though, and that’s kinda what we’re looking for again. |
