Grade II separation.
I was helping a family at church move, and was carrying one end of a dresser up a ramp into the moving truck. I was walking backwards, and stepped off the side of the ramp where it enters the back of the truck. I fell sideways, hitting all of my 230 lbs on my right shoulder. I also banged up my right knee, left shin, and to add insult to injury got hit square on the head with the dresser. Not lifting for a freaking month is going to kill me. I guess that I can do some light lower body stuff, but am not looking forward to seeing the last year's worth of progress disappear. |
| 2 years ago playing football I got fucked up and got a 3rd degree ac joint separation. I could not lift upper body for atleast 5 months and once I could it hurt like a son of a bitch. I finally got my strength back but the bitch still hurts when I am warming up for bench some days. Worst injury I have ever had because you cant do shit except lunges for 5 months. On top of that my shoulder is still separated and sticks out an inch or so. And my arm and shoulder muscles are weird as shit because of how big my bump is... That said, give it time, it will hurt for a while, atleast it wasn't a 3rd degree separation and get used to not being able to do shit lifting unless you want alot of pain. |

Did you have surgery? My ortho said said some Grade IIIs require surgery, and everything Grade IV and up definitely requires surgery.
I am going to go nuts if I can't lift for several months. How long after your injury did you start physical therapy? I am hoping to start ROM stuff on my own in a week or so, unless that will cause further injury. I am not a very patient patient. |

No surgery. Mine might of been worse because it was a 3rd degree but it took me a very long time to do much of anything. |
Surgery is... a surgeons preference, but the studies show that Medical management is equal if not superior
Take it easy, WORK HARD at your rehab, and I'm sure your gains from last year will come back extremely quick. =) |

My left shoulder dislocates. I have know idea what degree or whatnot it is. If I was free style swimming, the angle of my arm as my hand would re-enter the water -freeze that position. That is where my shoulder is the least stable, any upward pressure from under the elbow will pop it out. Standing up, sitting down what ever. I've had it pop back punching a guy once. Have it pop out hacking the back of a guys knee too... Come out doing pullups a few times...
First time it popped out was wrestling my buddy in the pool. Our own way of building confindence in the water and all. Took it easy for a few weeks and got right back to doing pushups, pullups and bar dips. It has dislocated probably around 100+ times in the last 15 years. But lately, as in the last 4-5 years (I think) it hasn't popped out at all? I know the ROM's to avoid and it's usually pretty good. When it does dislocate I typically have to grab my elbow and snap it back into place and then take it easy for a few days until it 'tightens' back up. When lifting weights the only real trouble I'd have was bent over rear lateral raises. Had to use a cable to keep constant pressure on it. That was about it. Once, I was tossing a sheet of plywood and it popped out like Leathal Weapon style. I tried to have bosses daughter snap it back in, she was no help. Then I realized that this was a Briggs type dislocation so I needed to lean up against a stack of plywood, relax, it slide back into place without a fight |

Time is all that helps.
I got my grade III playing sandlot football in the Army. I, for some odd reason thought it would be a good idea to hurdle the guy going low to tackle me on an interception return. Dumb. Dumb. I went up, and next thing I know my legs are pinned together and I'm listing to starboard. *BAM* I heard a really loud popping sound. As it turns out, those were ligaments. I went from being able to do 120 pushups at a go to not being able to do one. On the bright side, It was my right shoulder, so my strength evened out laterally when I could get back into working out. I recently got 300 pounds up on the bench press.....almost 20 years later to the day. You'll recover. It just takes time. |
