Just a quick background on the situation, I am going in for an interview this Thursday afternoon for an open Sergeant position. I just found out about this interview a couple hours ago.  Three of us have put in for the position, we are a non-civil service department in a smaller town.  All that have applied have about the same time in service with this department with similar backgrounds.  Pretty much anyone of us could get the position.

My question is what would you all think would be asked during the interview?  Policy questions?  Ethics questions?  I am confident, but just do not want to look like a total retard during this interview.

Thanks for the help.

Policy, particularly use of force and vehicle pursuits.

Ethics.

Have a few ideas on what you would like to change within your agency, and how/when to implement them.

One thing I did when I tested for Sergeant was a recon mission on the Chief's office (he leaves his door open).  I studied things he had written on his whiteboard and then observed books that were presently stacked on his desk and became familiar with each and every one of them.  My little scouting mission was very helpful when answering leadership philosophy questions asked during the interview (I got the job BTW).

Go back and read every directive/policy including your Town's (or county) and be prepared to be accountable for silly little admin/HR things like "how long does a person have to notify a supervisor to make a workman's comp claim?"  Study your department mission and instead of reading it understand what it means, particularly if the standing Chief/Sheriff wrote it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I think that one of the three  already has it in the bag.  You can see it in the way everyone is acting.  As for policy, we have over 1,000 pages of written policy not including other sop.  We will see how it goes.  You never know around here.  Lol!  Thanks again.

You might want to consider how you're going to explain your method of getting officers to do good work. Motivational theories etc..

As well as your thoughts on disciplinary action.  I found that my interpretation of the "hot stove" theory was well received.
