Why do people "mark out" serial numbers when they show pics on the net?

What is so secret about it that I'm missing?

To prevent miscreants from reporting them stolen to the local authorities, who will then notify the national authorities. Why would anyone do this? I dunno, but I don't put it past folks......

none of their business.

posting the s/n of a firearm isn't the same as posting the s/n of a toaster.

I heard story about a guy in the late 80s that had the serial of his gun turn up as used in a crime. When the police contacted him, he told them he still had it, and rechecked the serial. Sure enough, the same serial. The gun was a mac10 and the one used in the crime had been made on a home built frame and them stamped with a random serial #. The police figure that the person that built it, likely just found a serial and changed few numbers. Still, none of their biz.

Why would you want the ABC's to see a SN from a paperless gun?
