I'm not sure if I count as an aficionado, and I'm also not sure how "widely available" it is, but I like Westmalle Dubbel, and I can sometimes find it out here in the boonies.

I lived in Belgium for 3 years and tried a lot of beer. Now that I'm back in the US, I'd recommend the following:
Chimay Grand Reserve or Blau if you can find it.

St Bernardus Abt 12 is about as close to Westvleteren 12 as you can get without actually having it.

The New Belgian Brewing Trippel is a very good substitute and is readily available and much less than $7 a bottle. It's brewed in the US but punches way above its weight. I can find it at my local Walmart all the time. NBB's 1554 tries really hard to be a dark Belgian Ale, but I just can't get into it.

I'll have to try the ones mentioned above. I like Leffe and Duvel. I'm glad nobody has mentioned Stella yet.

Piraat is very very good. Not dark or red but still a strong trippel style. Gulden Draak to me is the standard baseline to judge up or down other Belgian trips and quads.

Leffe is meh for me. Duvel is a legit triple.

If you can find Orval, go for it. It's really tasty, but may be hard to find.
Anything Chimay is good, except maybe the Green, didn't care for it.
St Bernardus in all forms is good, 12, 8, 6
One of these day's I'll set out all of my beer glasses and post some pics. I have a few.

I took this pic at a local grocery store. This is a smaller collection

I know it isn't Belgian, but I dig the New Belgium Triple. It is easier to find than some of the other beers mentioned here, but if I can find them, I'll pick some up.

What part of SC, and what grocery store? I've never seen a selection like that at Publix, Kroger or the local liquor store.

Westmalle Tripel.  Rochefort, any of them.  Chimay Blue if you're in the mood for something thick and chewy.  St. Bernardus---all of them, and yep, the 12 too.  Not a big Orval guy, but people like them.  Be in the mood for something overtly hoppy.

Lambics, Frank Boon's Gueze, De drolle something-or-other.  Lindemans for sweet fruit lambics.  Cantillon, the one I had, unimpressed.  Hard to be, admittedly, as long as I waited to try it.  (E.g., Haut-Brion didn't make it.  'Yquem sure as hell did, though.)

Anyway, for my favorite of them all, Rodenbach, grand cru or not.  Just so Goddamned refreshing and delicious.

The glasses were something that surprised me when I spent some time in Belgium. Seems like it would really limit the number of beers a restaurant or bar can carry, which is probably the point.

You don't see a lot of beer advertising in BEL. The glasses are the advertisement.
If a bar runs out of clean glasses they won't serve the beer until they have the correct glasses to serve it in.
If you go to a zoo in Belgium and go to the restaurant in the zoo, they will have beer, good beer, and will have the correct glasses lined up for your enjoyment.
Some of the glasses have wooden stands because they can't stand on their own. Kwak is a good example.
Interesting story of why the glass is the way it is

Saison DuPont is the classic farmhouse ale. It has that unique horse blanket flavor that you may have heard mention of. It’s a very good representation of the farmhouse style.

Duchess de Bourgogne is a Belgian sour, however it is slightly different from the sours you will find here in the US. It is a sour cherry however the finish is more of a balsamic flavor and trust me, it’s effing good. A sipper for sure.

Gouden Carolus classic is great beer. Het Anchor brewery where it's brewed is in Mechelen (or Maline in French), where Belgian Malinois dogs originated.
