A mayor candidate in the region I'm from fired her longest term employee for wearing a MAGA hat on election day. Now she is begging for help from her big city friends to prop up her google reviews... link to google reviews

Everything after she told the employee that she couldn't wear the hat WAS subject to being fired.

No doubt. I would actually like working in a shop which keeps politics out of the workplace.

Well, the business owner is right. Simple as that. Its a damn simple request to take off a hat so fuck that employee, they deserve to be fired. Thats how business ownership works. If the owner did the firing while wearing a Kamala hat thats a whole different ballgame but if political isnt allowed thats pretty cut and dried.

You can be 100% right but still be wrong.

Since it sounds like she wasn't even open yet, it was a stupid hill to die on.

She should've fired the employee that needed a therapist afterwards.

Looks up federally protected classes ....

Race

Color
Religion/faith*
Sex
National origin or ancestry
Disability
Genetic information
Citizenship
Veteran status

Sorry, political party is not a protected class.

Right to work state? Some state laws will expand on these federal ones but they can't take them away (unlike gun laws )

You're both right.

She's absolutely allowed to fire her employee for that reason.

The fired employee is absolutely allowed to tell everyone why she was fired.

The people in the community are absolutely allowed to treat that business owner in a way that reflects their opinion of her business practices.

It sounds like she moved to a community where her views are not shared by most of her neighbors. Instead of assimilating to her new home, she immediately started trying to get involved in local politics to force her views on her new neighbors.

Perhaps she should move back to where she came from. She might fit in better back there.

I've personally seen medical professionals at large hospital systems wearing Harris, BLM, and Pride pins.  HR ain't gonna touch that with a 10ft pole.  You could imagine what would happen if the roles were reversed.

Pretty much that.

I work in the oilfield in Texas. I’d wager that 99%+ of our workforce from senior management all the way down voted for Trump.  I still wouldn’t do that because it’s unprofessional.

We are in an office environment and the dress code has been relaxed to casual dress since covid. Even with that there is a hard no slogans/brands/advertisements policy. Seems like they cut off their nose to spite their face.

The MAGA employee screwed up it sounds like but she could get a lawyer to extract a “go be quite payoff” settlement. The owner should shitcan the manager as well and reiterate ‘no politics’ in the office.

Everyone should keep their politics on BOTH sides out of the professional space. No one at work should know how anyone votes.

If it was a MAGA business that fired an employee for a Harris hat, what would we be saying?

I'm much more in the "in this moment of greatness as we celebrate our win, we need to look inside to ensure we don't become the monsters we claim to hate".

She’s pretty clear that “we don’t do political at our shop.”

Wouldn’t be a stretch.  There are tons of people from both parties who leave their politics out of business.

The election had already happened, she stated that she lost.

That’s irrelevant anyways.  She didn’t say that the employee couldn’t be a Republican… she said she can’t advertise it. Which as a business owner is her right to do.
