How do most of you ship a handgun?
The UPS store wanted $158.00 for next day Air. UPS Docs says it has to ship overnight or next day air or am I reading it wrong? |
|
FFLs can send handguns to other FFLs through the US mail. It's often cheapest to take your pistol to an FFL, pay them a fee for the service, and have them ship the handgun to its destination parcel post or the like.
Flat rate priority box works for most handguns, and if you bring it in all packed and ready to ship (but not sealed), an FFL will probably charge you $20-30 for their time in filling out the PS1508 and taking it to the post office. |

Shipping through an FFL is sometimes cheaper. Don't tell UPS it's a firearm and ship it regular UPS ground. UPS requires the overnight thing because their own employees are a bunch off thieves.. Quoted:

USPS flat rate that mamma jamma and call it a day. If you want to break the law, sure. Only FFL to FFL can go USPS |

Well my FFL wants $40 plus shipping to ship it. May just ship it UPS ground and be done with it. $23 including insurance. |

You're violating their company policy and won't give a shit when you say it was lost. Working for a shipping company I saw this all the time. |

Last time I used UPS it was approx. 70.00......
None of the stores will accept them.....must use a hub..... not declaring it as a firearm and using USPS is really terrible advice......they do randomly x-ray/inspect packages.....and a heavy box going to a gun shop/FFL would be my choice to look inside..... |
| if you are an individual you need to ship it common carrier so Fedex or UPS. Go tot a hub and not to the store. should only cost you 80 or so . If you or if your work will allow have a account that does a bit of buisness with them sometimes the shipping can be a lot less expensive. A guy i know used his work account to ship ups overnight on a gun for $35 . |

I thought if it was a handgun it had to go overnight for a individual shipping by law? Also some ffl are not keen on receiving guns from individuals? not the law, just a requirement by the shipping companies. keeps theft down as it passes through less hands |
| UPS Ground and don't tell them it's a firearm. I worked for UPS. They do not care what you are shipping, but they would love to take as much money as they can from you. Their "handguns must ship next day air" policy is complete BS and not required by law at all. |

Source? I have had undeclared contraband shipped to me by clueless customers confiscated by USPS. I don't know if they x-rayed it, or found it by randomly opening and inspecting packages, but they found it and took it. I got the package with the non-contraband (M1 carbine) portion of the package and a note from the postal inspector's office in Denver that they'd seized the rest of the contents. |

That's odd--never heard of that happening. I know UPS never scans or opens packages, so I assumed USPS wouldn't either. |

In other words, its a felony, and you loose your ability to legally possess firearms and ammunition. The USPS does regularly discover handguns being shipped by unlicensed (i.e., not an FFL) idiots. As for shipping via UPS Ground or FEDEX Ground, or shipping in any way that is a violation of their tariff, and you have no ability to recover the value of the firearm if damaged, lost, or stolen. Find a local licensee to do it for you. |

This, use an FFL, they can ship Priority. Insurance and signature included will be under $20 to ship, then if your FFL charges $30, you are at under $50. Otherwise, use FedEx overnight saver for like $70. |

Where does that say anything about randomly X-raying packages? Go to: faq.usps.com Type in the search box: "x-ray". Read the following: Is Mail X-Rayed?
Some of the mail that is sent through the United States Postal Service will pass through an X-Ray machine. There are no specific guidelines as to what may or may not be x-rayed, though mail sent to or through larger cities is likely to pass through an X-Ray machine. If you have additional questions about X-Raying of items, contact your local Post Office. Note: Marking a mailpiece "Do Not X-Ray" will not forgo the X-Raying of a mailpiece, and may result in the item being considered suspicious. |
