I'm buying an upper from a buddy in Ky. He's going to ship it to me here in PA. What are some good practices for shipping something like this?

EDIT: Its a full upper with bolt and CH, 20" govt.

Wrap it in bubble wrap, put it in a box, purchase postage and insurance, attach a shipping label and send it off.

Make sure to pad the ends.  Ive received uppers from the EE that had the muzzle poking out of the box.

This.  Buy a whole roll of bubble wrap and make sure you really protect the muzzle and the receiver end.  Put it in a suitable box and be sure to insure it.  I generally stay away from Fed Ex and UPS because they ask too many questions.  I have REALLY good luck with the USPS.

Lots of bubble wrap and if using UPS or FedEx, use one of their boxes. They have one that ships up to 20" upper perfectly. Its shaped like a trilangle.

This. I just received another bcm box today that's going to be used next week to ship out an upper. I've never had ups ask anything other than what was in the box. I tell them "upper receiver" and they say "okay". I doubt they even know what it actually is.

As someone who works for a major cargo company, Pack it like it's going to be handled by a rabid NFL team with ADHD. Water-proof it too before you bubble wrap it. Some packages are briefly exposed to the elements during shipping.

PVC pipe, 2 caps, newspaper, tape

only way to go!

Pack it like a Faberge egg, and if anyone asks- it's "machine parts".

Make sure to really pad both ends and eliminate any shifting of the upper in the box or this might happen:
