Looking at vests for IPDA.

Need some suggestions.

find a solid green or black BDU top.  carefully pull the seams or stiches out that hold the sleeves on.  VOILA!

Or an old sports jacket/sport coat from good will.

Or do the Magnum P.I. thing and wear a Hawaiian print shirt.

I was thinking more along the lines of this:

Unless you're already at the top of your game, that extra 10th of a second you save by wearing a vest instead of the jacket you would be wearing anyway isn't going to matter.

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to reinforce your training and 'muscle memory' while enjoying yourself. Conversely, sounds like a chance to develop habits under stress that aren't consistent with 'real life'.

Clearing leather from concealment is going to be different from day to day based on clothing and weather.

I'm sporty enough to be able to handle it but thanks for the pro-tip.

Can't be of much help... I drew the line at actually buying a vest for IDPA and contented myself with a jacket.

I was an SO at the 2007 IDPA nat's.  Backyard Outfitters hooked us all up with a bunch of "tactical clothes" from the Woolrich Elite Tactical Series.  I'm all for supporting those who support our shooting sports.

Doing some googling, it appears that Woolrich discontinued that line and/or Backyard Outfitters no longer carries it.

Back when I was competing I used a cheap skeet shooting vest. The kind with the mesh sides, since it made the vest much cooler in the summer.

It should be how you carry on the street.  Are you there to train or play a game?

But that's not tactical at all, how could it possibly work?

ETA:  I just started shooting IDPA and I wear a polo shirt as my concealment garment as I do in real life.

I just wear a button up shirt over a t-shirt, or my normal jacket in colder weather.  No way in hell I'm spending $80+ on a vest with a bunch of useless pockets I would never wear outside of a match.  And this summer I forgot to bring concealment at all and ended up just using the golf/polo shirt I had on as concealment.  Slower than an "over-garment" but its what I wear often anyway so it was good practice.

Some people do treat it as a game, and there's nothing wrong with that.  It's a shooting sport, after all.

That means they use underpowered bullets, hair triggers, holsters with no retention capability, and every other trick they can use within the rules to gain an edge in this [i]sport/[i].  It's just that in this case, I suspect an $80 vest would bring less value than another 4 boxes of pistol ammo for practicing.

1. Find a place to shoot USPSA instead of IDPA.

I was going to say play a different game where aholes don't over officiate and call penalties that don't exist so they can have a better time.  And yes its a game not training.

I've been shooting PPC and IPDA. I like both for what they are, which are gun games.

I'd go to USPSA shoots too but most of them are too far away.

I appreciate the suggestions fellas, thank you.

Hopefully he's there to play a game, because that's what IDPA is*.

OP, I use a 5.11 vest.. it's stiff and easy to sweep away during the draw.  It is HOT in the summer, though.  Then again, I wear it to shoot and take it off when not shooting if it's hot outside.

I also have the Woolrich vest mentioned earlier.  It's good and lighter material than the 5.11.

*Unless you're this guy from the Kenya Mall shooting.  He's not only wearing a shootme vest and shooting glasses, but the vest sports an IDPA patch:

Did you find a vest? I have a XXL khaki 5.11 vest that I bought a few years ago thinking I was going to use it like a turkey vest when shooting prairie dogs, but it has never been out of the house. I washed it a few times to try and soften it up a bit, then hung it in the closet. It is yours if you want it. I had another member just send me something free of charge, so I will give you the vest as a pay it forward / karma type thing. If you want it IM me

I get out of the car, go to the safety area, unload and clear. Shoot the match. Reload and drive away. No vest, just what I'm wearing that day.

Of course I'm the guy that will a revolver match with a chiefs special just for the practice.

Yeah, I'm starting to see that. I dropped out of a pistol league after the friends I shoot with and I started to see the resulting training scars begin to form.

This thread is pretty much the first IDPA specific discussion I've had on the subject. Hence the 'starting to' in my comment. Had a couple IPSC guys show up at a practical pistol class with race guns, skeleton holsters, reduced loads etc, and that ignited some discussions on the subject. I was assured that IDPA was "better" in that regard, never gave it much thought. Now I see IDPA guys looking to change up from their EDC clothing / habits in order to gain an advantage, saying "it's just a game". It's disappointing.

I perform complex motor skills under stress for a living, teach others to do the same, and have been involved in reality base self defense (armed and unarmed) for years. I've taken Rory Miller's views on training, stress response and training scars to heart.

I've found no need for a vest whatsoever... long or short sleeve overshirt - done.  Plus it's something that I can and do wear on a regular basis, not part of a shooting "outfit".

When I shoot IDPA I just wear Jeans and a shirt - just like I carry.

Inevitably I get a few tacticool guys in vests come up and ask if its my first time.

It is fun when I whoop them.
