I saw Shooter tonight, sneak preview.  A quick and dirty review.

Firearms use - Fairly accurate, moreso than most movies.  I caught a few issues, but nothing that made me want to shoot the screen.

Gun pr0n - Barrett M107s, Rem 700s, Beretta 92FSs, Glocks, 1911s, G36s, M4s, and more.

Body count - Very high.

Explosions - Plenty.

Female actresses - Let's just say that when the Kentucky girl brought out the .22 and said, "I cleaned and oiled it before I put it away," my pants became very tight.

Issues - Very much conspiracy theory, right-winger corporations will be the end of the world.  Plenty of cracks at the current administration.  I tolerated it.  Barely.

All in all, a good popcorn flick.  Worth more than I paid for a ticket (nothing).

Please name a recent really good movie that doesn't take political cheap shots. Hollyweird wonders why they are suffering.

aren't markey mark and danny glover(sp) incredibly anti-gun?

Glover is a 1st rate communist.

ETA: Funny how he seems to take roles in movies that glorify them though, isn't it?

I read this synopsis of the movie somewhere, is it true?

Might be a spoiler.
"In the film, Mark Wahlberg plays one of Hunter's most popular characters, a former sniper named Bob Lee Swagger, who is called out of retirement to thwart an assassination attempt on the president. It turns out to be a set-up, and soon Swagger is on the run - but not before uncovering a conspiracy with links to Big Oil and a mass grave in Ethiopia."

Correct.  GySgt Bob Lee Swagger is a former "Force Recon Marine Scout-Sniper".  Won the Wimbeldon Cup, put five shots into 1.5" at 1000m, fell off tall buildings in a single bound, etc.

Favorite line of the movie, "I'm just an odd guy who lives in the woods with his dog and a bunch of guns".  Thought of all the "I can't figure out women" posts here on GD.

How about the conspiracy angle and the mass grave in Ethiopia?

Anybody can do that!!

Now leaping tall buildings in a single bound, is a skill.

It's also a skill if you can fall off and survive.

For what it's worth:

Mark Wahlberg went to Front Sight for training prior to or during filming.

For what it's worth

Anyone can fall off and survive...someone that can fall off, AND and survive now thats a skill.

Falling never hurt anyone...that sudden stop at the bottom is a bitch though.

Barrett M107 ? , Thats not what is in the trailer , Looks like a Windrunner he's using

Yes, it's a good flick.  The dialogue is lacking and it won't be winning any Oscars, unlike Training Day, but it's worth seeing.

I was wondering what Marky Mark's personal .50 was, I guess it's a Windrunner.  He uses a Barrett in the beginning while in the Marines.

I read that book. It had alot of holes in the plot. Lots of holes in the gun stuff too. It was a mediocre book at best.

I reckon that I will see this flick when an opportunity to do so at no cost comes along.

ETA: In the book he was asked to test some "sniper grade ammo."  He fired some of the ammo and the bullets were recovered, placed into sabots, and another shooter used those sabots to make a couple of kills at over 1000 yards.

I saw Mark Whalberg on Leno the other night and he said all the training he got he would never ever use again. Kinda tells me he is a total sell out. (I'm sure his current Hollywood status garnered him 10+Mil for this flick)

Actually I think is is called a Cheytac, which is a derivative of the 50 bmg Windrunner

Great flick.

I will see it again with my daughter who is dying to go in the next few days. Mom said no to a midnight showing on a school night.

Good for me.

Really, don't miss it at the movies.

To be fair, Wahlburg was a violent thug and heavy drug user when he was younger, and renounced that part of his life as he got older.  He tries to avoid violence in any form in his personal life as a result.

He's not saying that no one should be allowed to have Front Sight (or other similar) training, just that HE will have no use for it personally.  Like a recovering alcoholic who no longer touches alcohol, he's not saying that no one should ever drink, but he knows that HE shouldn't drink.  Same thing.

I understand folks' sensitivity on this issue, but this is a guy who could easily have been anti-gun-RIGHTS on several occasions, but never went there despite his own personal viewpoint.  I can respect that.

Sounds like dumbed-down hollywood crap.

I'll wait till I can download it off the newsgroups, just as a fuck-you to Marky Mark. Nothing is better than taking money from the pockets of left-wingers.

Wellll, ummm, actually he DID go there during the filming of Planet of the Apes when he took a cheap shot at Charlton Heston.

Found this review, they called it "A liberal revenge fantasy (a friend calls it "Al Franken's 'Rambo' movie"), "Shooter" is proof that even Democrats crave blood."

I'll probably just wait for the DVD on this one and hang tight until Pathfinder comes out!
