Considering 9mm/.40sw/.45acp using a 3.5" barrel auto, which caliber is going to perform best using commercial available defense ammo?

45acp for the win, even better would be 10mm

The one you shoot the best.  Seeing as 9mm is cheaper, you'll be able to get more practice ammo for it, therefore, I'm going to say most likely 9mm.

I was hoping for some sex pointers.

Whatever cal you choose, go with Speer GD short barrel ammo.

You know what, I should have been more specific.  Looking at performance from a ballistic stopping power vs. a 5" barrel.

Most HP ammo is designed to perform as certain FPS and from a shorter barrel, may not achieve the FPS nessesary.

9mm or .45acp.

There are some seriously effective 9mm cartridges out there...or go big hole .45acp.  One can make an argument for either one.

About the same as comparing 9mm, 40, and 45 against each other in full sized barrel.

No clear winner.

Winchester Rangers are what we pack in our 9's.  Same with 1911's.  I love these cartridges although I've never had to test them in real life yet.  I feel confident we're not undergunned with our ammo (although I don't want to go up against a rifle )
