I'm shotgun illiterate, so school me. I'm soon getting a shotgun, and have started looking at shells. I've bought one box of Hornady TAP 00 Buck. I was looking around Wally-World for a WWB equivelant for practice and can't seem to find ANYTHING in 00.

The boxes are marked instead with :
Gauge
Shell length
Weight in gram/Oz. (Weight of WHAT?)
and Shot (7.5, 8, etc...)  What does this mean?

Are any of those 00, or would it specifically say "00", like the Hornady TAP?

Gauge - the number of solid lead balls with a diameter the same as the bore that it would take to equal a pound.
shell length - the length of the shell
weight - the weight of the load of shot
shot - the size of the largest screen that shot will not pass through (I think) the larger the number of the smaller the shot size

Shell length IIRC, this refers to the fired length of the shell
Weight in gram/Oz. (Weight of WHAT?) Weight of the shot.
and Shot (7.5, 8, etc...)  What does this mean?  The number is the shot size. See chart posted by someone else.

If it's 00 buck, it will say "00 Buck".

For inexpensive shotgun practice, just buy 1 or 1 1/8th ounce(weight of shot) loads of whatever promotional shell is cheapest.

ETA, what is hard to understand about these(other than the antiquated dram equivalent BS)?

If the OP buys a semi-auto shotgun he should try one box of the promos to see if it will cycle his action. Some of their promo stuff is weak.

(I forgot, this is ARFCOM, where everyone has a pump and sits around all day listening to that sweet rack music)

Huh? Are you implying that I've used the word "illiterate" incorrectly?
if so, you're mistaken:
Main Entry: il·lit·er·ate
Pronunciation: \(ˌ)i(l)-ˈli-t(ə-)rət\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin illiteratus, from in- + litteratus literate
Date: 15th century
1: having little or no education ; especially : unable to read or write <an illiterate population>

I've used it in the context of having no education in the realm of shotguns.

ETA, what is hard to understand about these(other than the antiquated dram equivalent BS)?

As shown in your second pic, there's a clear annotation of being 00 Buck, but all I could find at Wally world were the styles shown in your first pic that only list a weight and shot count, which lead me to one of two conclusions: either Wally-World was COMPLETELY and thoroughly out of 00 Buck (plausible, but surprising) or that 00 Buck could also be labeled using an alternate method based on weight and shot count (again, plausible), so I asked.

Based on the responses, it appears they were simply out of it.

It's a Mossberg M590A1, so I should be GTG.

My ancient 590 sometimes hiccups when I am using cheapie low brass, and have gotten it hot.

My 870 despises low brass.

For practice you can just use "cheap" birdshot. Wal-Mart sells 100 round packs of Federal 1 1/8 oz.; 7.5 shot for about $22. They also sell single 25 round boxes of 1 oz. Federal birdshot that are a little bit cheaper per round than the 100 round 1 1/8 oz. packs last time I checked (I haven't bought any in over a year though...I think the 1 oz. loads are about $4.57 per box, which works out to $18.28 per 100 rounds. Prices may have risen recently though).
For "cheap" buckshot available at Wal-Mart the best you're going to be able to do is 15 round "Value Packs" of either Winchester Super-X or Remington 00 buckshot. Should be about $9.50 per 15 rounds...not exactly cheap, but they're probably cheaper than Hornandy and will still get the job done. I've used the Super-X 00 from Wally World as home defense loads for a while now.
Shotgun ammo has not been immune to all the price hikes. It was much cheaper to shoot shotguns a few years ago...should have stocked up then.

It has something to do with powder charge (dram is an archaic unit of measure)...so it relates to velocity in a way.
I'm not educated on all that stuff, and I'm too lazy to Google for it right now.

Yeah, I was unclear on the matter when I first got my shotgun because I just couldn't find the 00 on the shelf

These days though it's actually less common for there to be 00 buck on the shelf at the local Wal-Mart. It doesn't last long.

Seriously. Each time I eyeball the ammo counter, it's a little more naked.
