What is the proper way to refer to shotgun shells when you are talking about quantity?

For example, do you say:

1) I fired 25 shot shells through my 12 gauge today.

or

2) I fired 25 rounds through my 12 gauge today.

I prefer bullets, the fudds get less confused that way.

I don`t know about proper, but i`d say..... I went through a box of shells today. Or went through a box of 7 1/2s today.

I say shells. Like a box or case of shells. When I hear cartridge, I think rifle/pistol. FWIW
