I just bought an el cheapo shotgun and as I was reading the manual I noticed that it says you can only shoot Lead Shot. How many types of shot are there? I bought a box and it didn't say anything about what type it was. It only said hard shot. Does that mean steel? Thanks |

If it was steel, I think it would say steel on the outside of the box. You usually only see steel shot in shells for waterfowl hunting. Oh besides steel there are some steel alternatives like ?Tungsten and Bismuth?? that are supposed to be legal for waterfowl hunting but perform better than steel shot. You'd know if you bought that stuff, it's pretty expensive (or was the last time I looked). |

I have a question along the lines of this thread. Why does it matter what shot you use when its inside a plastic hull going out the barrel anyway? olyman, how cheap of a shotgun? I've got a mossberg 500, which is pretty cheap, and I can shoot steel shot through it. |
| This was a $120 chineese gun. Just got it for fun and to get a feel for shotguns. Century International Arms has them and so does a place called Dunhams which is where I bought it. 4+1 tubular magazine. All black synthetic furniture. 20in or so barrel. This is weird because when you pump it, the empty drops out the bottom ( the same place you feed them). Also has rifle sights. I'm going to try to use it tomorrow although it's 20 degrees out. Brrrrrr! |

Quoted: I have a question along the lines of this thread. Why does it matter what shot you use when its inside a plastic hull going out the barrel anyway? Steel is much harder than lead or bismuth. Lead and bismuth, for example will deform slightly as it travels down the barrel, and especially when it is compressed through the choke. Steel will not. Modern steel shot loads are manufactured with thick shot cup petals that help protect the inside of the barrel, but it does not help when the shot charge hits the choke. That is why "full choke" constrictions of around .003 and tighter are not recommended for steel shot, especially in the larger shot sizes like BBB, T and F. |

Steel doesn't "flow" the same and can damage some barrels. |

olyman: This was a $120 Chinese gun. Just got it for fun and to get a feel for shotguns. $120? Shoot anything you want out of it, it's not a Perazzi! [;D] Really, steel won't hurt the thing enough to worry about it. The cheapy-Chiny-scatter-guns can surprise you though (if you don't expect TOO much), they're usually pretty tough. Ugly, but stout....[:)] |

Ahhhh So it's really about the compression and not the hull. Never thought about that(obviously). Thanks guys. Oly, In my un-asked for humble opinion, take that Chinese thing back (if you can), get yourself another 80 bucks, and go get a Mossberg 500 from wally world. If you end up not likeing the feel of shotguns, or the mossy in particular, it will be MUCH easier to sell than the other one. You'll probably hear from the Remington 870 folks here also(the express is about $250 I think, at wally also) about it being much better than the Mossberg. I don't know, since I haven't ever shot one. |
