I'd be wanting to get a portable unit so I could listen to it like an MP3 player, so figure $200-300 there, and then $13 a month or $143 a year (a little cheaper) to be able to listen to it, so an initial outlay of $393 + tax, a week and a half's pay for me. I see, out of 150 stations, maybe up to 15 that I'd want to listen to with any frequency, and one of those is off for a month broadcasting christmas music, apparently (The System). Is it worth it? I mean, it seems most of what they have is sports, news, tv rebroadcasts, and country or rap stations. |

... Funniest fucking thing happened to me whilst replying to this thread! I spilled a glass of cab on my keyboard just before I hit send - hence the funny reply above. ... Anyway, I was saying - I recently bought a receiver and subscribed to the service, but i feel the value because my taste in music / talk radio runs the gamut. I do reside to the fact I may very well grow tired of the $10/mo fees and drop it someday. But not for now. |

I've had XM for about 5 months, and love the variety. You will never hear commercial radio play the tunes available on XM. I can listen to big band from the 40s, or Techno, or Classic Country, or Album Cut Rock, or Nascar, or Traffic, or CNN, or whatever. I won't tell you its perfect, because its far from perfect. If you go under a bridge, or overhang, tree, etc., the lack of antenna reception will cut your listening short. But - the rewards of GOOD music outweigh the negatives. |
1 more question... Do they have portable units that can be played in the home? |
Both SIRIUS and XM can do that, so you're not just stuck listening to it in your vehicle. |

Here's a link to some good deals on XM radios www.xmradio.com/holidayoffer/holidayshop.jsp |
Are they comparibly priced? |
Nope they shipped those jobs off to Jamacia. |

We just signed up two days ago. XM is running some pretty good deals. See this thread over at FW: XM Deals We got two car kits for about $10.00 each after everything. Follow the rules and you will be set for pretty cheap. btw, I've been looking into both for many weeks, listening to XM online to get an idea of what they play (i've got sirius on my Dish Network). I really like XM for now. We have a 6 month commitment, so all is not lost if we change our mind. Go do the 3-day trial on XMradio.com and see if it the stuff you like. Eric |
but....larger cities like NYC, Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul has "repeaters" located in different locations so you don't lose the signal due to tall buildings. |
... Not only that, but if you subscribe, you can receive streaming audio on your P/C (anywhere) of all the available stations by simply registering on-line with your receiver's unique serial number - uber kewl |
Damn, I wish I'd known about that a few days ago. I just paid $55 for a roady 2 with car kit, home kit, and remote off of fleabay with no service included. Looks like using that website I could have got two seperate radios, car kit for one, home kit for the other, + six months of service for about double that. |

I bought my Zen mp3 player and then a few weeks later I got my Sirius for my truck...I only listen to the MP3 while at the gym or on airplanes or while out riding my moutnain bike...when in the truck I dont even listen to cd's anymore let alone FM radio...sat radio is the best investment ive made.... Only drawback about listening to your mp3 player is you are missing out on alot of new stuff that comes out..and takes months to hit mainstream radio. Plus sat gives you sports options..Sirius gets NFL, NBA, Hockey, NCAA...XM gets Baseball .... Direct TV just got XM as their radio and I like the channels but the Sirius has more metal music that I enjoy... |
Yea just got it. Very good, No commercials is great. You can also listen to it on a PC which is good. So I dont have to bring my car unit into the home. I just hook speakers up to my PC |
Lifetime fee is currently $499. Problem is, it's for the life of the radio. That means if you drop the five bills on a "lifetime" membership and your radio craps out on you (for whatever reason) after six months, you are fucked. |
that sucks |
| I just bought the Sirius S50 which is satellite radio and an mp3 player together. Its portable so you can listen to your mp3s just like an Ipod and then when you plug it into your car you get the satellite and whatever mp3s you download. It will also record/rewind/and fastword live sirius broadcast just like Tivo for the Tv. Its on I paid $280 for it at best buy after a mail in rebate... heres the link on it ... www.sirius.com/gs/s50/ |
But you can get Laura Ingraham, Michael Reagan and Glenn Beck. (I wish they'd replace Dr LAura with someone better) I wish they had Rush, but Hannity is a fool. IMO Ingraham is the best conservative radio personality |
