| How do you use the front post on iron sights? Top of the post just below the desired POI or do you cover the target? When I was a kid I would cover the target with the front post but now I hold just below the desired POI. |

I shoot at 6" diameter green circles, so I hold my rifle at 6 O'clock and it hits 3 inches over my front sight post at 100 yards... I put the green circle just atop the front sight post with just a teeny bit of white if any. It's really up to you. I used to bisect the target with the front sight post, this way I could imagine that the bullet would strike right on top the front sight post, but I found that is a difficult hold for me for some reason. I started holding under the circle, and I get more consistent groups and a more accurate target. Shawn |

Quoted: Personal preference. srv, where do you get these green circles? I just shoot at WalMart targets. TS I shoot at Missouri Department of Conservation ranges, and they supply them included with the range fee. Here's the last target I shot... It was hellishly cold that day and I decided I'd pop off 5 good ones, and ended up being pretty happy with the target... This is at 100 yards with 55 grn SA .223 in twenty degree weather... (using a 6 o'clock hold!) [:)] Shawn |

come on shawn....you just poked the rounds thru the paper and laid a couple of them on the target....tell the truth. HEHE! the same method works perfect for me also. when someone else shoots 1 of my toys they say hey" this thing shoots low" i think its more important to do what ever your comfortable with. nice costume pics at the other sight too....the boogieman is gonna get you. |

Fidel Go to Jim Owens web site http://www.jarheadtop.com/ He's one of the THE authorities on High Power shooting. Click on the link in the menu on the left that says "Books". Then when the next page loads, scroll down and you can read the first 4 chapters online from his book "Sight Alignment, Trigger Control and the Big Lie". Very good information for a starting shooter. |

Quoted: Newbie question here. Just what is a "six o'clock" hold? Also. are there any online tuitorials/websites on how to use the ar15 iron sights correctly? Thanks Fidel. A six o’clock hold is when you correctly align the front and rear sight with each other, then line up the top of the front sight with the 6’oclock (or bottom) edge of the bulleye. It requires that you sight the rifle in beforehand so that when holding at 6 o’clock, the bullets impact it the center of the bullseye. The advantage is that it allows very precise competition-type shooting using that particular target at a particular distance. The disadvantage is that the rifle does not hit exactly where you are aiming. Thus it is poorly suited for self-defense type shooting.
