HUGE NEWB Question here. I finally have the parts to assemble my first EBR. Looking over the box of stuff, I see no sights. Which I now recall were not included in the PSA kit. So.. I suspect I'll use this for target shooting and hopefully next spring, some sage rat shooting at longer range than I can reach with my 10/22. I have a .30-06 with a nice Leupold Scope on it, but other than that, I am clueless. I don't mind getting something nice for future use on a better rifle, but I don't know where to start. I see something call BUIS, and have deciphered that those are Back-up Iron Sights. I presume that means they are used in the event optics fail/break or whatever? What is the difference between a REFLEX sight and a Red-Dot sight? Do I buy a traditional scope? Can I mount 3 different optics like I've seen on some super operator rifles at the range?
I am so confused. TL; DR - Don't know what to put on top of new rifle so I can hit stuff |

Well, do you want to practice with irons or with optics?
My favorite combo on any rifle is irons paired with a lower power optic. 2x or 3x is my favorite. Not much shooting past 250 yards around here. Edit: My favorite AR optic was the Burris 332. Compact, worked if the batteries died, held zero fine. |

Eta: but I would add buis anyway. |

How much magnification you want is generally dictated by your range. A common rule of thumb for people with good vision is 1x per 100 yards. I like more than that and am willing to give up some field of view to get it. I like about 1.5x/100yards as a minimum. If your hunting game that's smaller than a small deer, you'll want even more. Just IMO. |

Congrats on your first EBR! I put a SWFA SS 10x42 on mine and was happy with it. http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p691/nigelcornwallis/20130925_154359-1_zpsd99aa151.jpg we both know what the OP meant, but i like yours better. |

OP, for now go on Amazon and buy the UTG front and rear BUIS set; be sure to get the front sight height that matches your gas block, if you want to put the sight there, or otherwise just get the same height front and rear and put them on the top rail (assuming you have one). They're nothing fancy, but they work, and are not expensive. Shoot your gun and absorb the knowledge about sights and optics as it comes to you. Then you can make an informed decision. |

Appreciate all the feedback.
I probably should have posted this Barrelled Upper so you'd know what I have. Note that I used the term "Assemble" vs. "Build" so as not to offend GD sensibilities. I AM starting with a stripped lower though. Because I am so Tier 1, I knew this was for me since it has a "Machine Gun Steel" barrel. That is good, right?
I am a member at a range that has >1000yd shooting, but I don't expect to go out past about 250 with this rifle. I think I'll just start with Irons and work my way up. |

That upper will easily make hits out to 400m without much effort on your end. Probably 600m+ on steel if you have a good optic and good fundamentals. |
