[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Sim City 5 (Page 1 of 4)

Quoted: Pre-ordered and played the first two betas. I wasn't able to play the third, four hour beta because I had to work. I played the first "beta" (not really a beta unfortunately) but haven't had a chance to play the other betas because of work as well. I am looking forward to the release. It looks like it could be fun to play with others as well. We should share our Origin usernames here so we can have a region that all the ARFCOM members play on. My username is the same as it is here, horadin. Feel free to add me.

Sure does look a whole lot better than the original sim city. I haven't played sim city in years might have to look into this one. The power lines are gone now it looks like much better with out the power lines i like how it intergrates the water sewer and power with the roads. Hell Suprised no one mentioned the Zombie attack that can happen in sim 5. Zombies are um new |

Zombies are um new Now if it were only possible to have mods, someone could created an Zombie Respons Team command center and outposts then Arfopolis could be a reality. Important question, since everything is online and conneted, does this mean I can't save my city before I set fire to everything for an urban renewal project? |

It's an MMO without the first M. Inet connection always required? I'm not getting it. |

You know I have played Simcity since the late 80's and it was a great game to play by yourself.
I was looking forward to buying Simcity 5 until I learned you had to have a constant on internet connection. That screwed the pooch for me. I have a spotty internet connection in the boonies where i live and with a data cap it is a no go. Not only that but you can't even play offline and then plug in to their servers. Yeah no thanks EA. way to fuck up a franchise. |

The other issue it brings up is that at anytime EA can shut the servers down (which they have done in the past for other games) and discontinue the current version of the game meaning you just lost any money you spent. Hell I was still getting play out of my older versions of simcity for a long time. That in all likely hood will be ending with this version especially if they push a new version or a forced upgrade so you cab have the pleasure to play on their servers. There were several guys on another forum quite pissed because they were in the military and didn't have access to the persistent internet connection in whatever shithole they were serving, precluding them from being able to play this version. |
![]() Why I no longer preorder games. I'll let someone else waste $60 to find out the game is pure shit. |
|
Harsh review. I was hoping EA wouldn't do their SOP but it looks like its no good. |

I will wait and see how the game progresses with the ones who pre-ordered if it turns to shit then money saved. If it turns out good then I might give it a shot. |

Yeah kind of the reason I didn't jump in right away. The reviews were stating that you reach max at 200K people. And the places are so small I mean why limit the space where you can build like that. |

The reviews were stating that you reach max at 200K people. And the places are so small I mean why limit the space where you can build like that. I read one review that stated it was setup more like a metropolis with suburbs. Each suburb is 200k limit, and thats why they are small. You can have multiples that grow together. |
|
I played the game for about 5 hours last night. Here are my thoughts. Yes the maps are tiny. I can't comment on the 200k population limit though. The idea of the game has changed from previous versions though. It isn't all about trying to get a huge city anymore. I feel like the idea is to get the region to work together and make a huge populous region. The game is a lot more detailed in what you can do and manage. There are a ton of really nice overlays that you can activate on the map that give you a lot of information to help grow your city. I mostly worked on one city and it has a pop of about 30k, I think. I don't really remember right now and I am not where I can check. During the game different citizens and advisers will give you different goals to reach. You do not have to do these but it does give you a cash reward for completing them. This helped out a lot since some of the stuff I wanted to build was really expensive and I was spending the money as fast as I was getting it. One thing that I did find out is that if you run out of cash, the game forces you to either take out a bond or cut back on utilities or other services to start making money again. You cannot hold a negative balance. As you play the game and reach certain requirements you can unlock new buildings and services to build. I really like that you can upgrade certain buildings as the game goes along. For example, if you build a wind power plant and need it to make more power you just add another wind turbine to the existing building. I did not have the time to do one of the great works sites, maybe I will get to that point tonight. Upgrading your roads is both easy and frustrating. You basically have two types, streets and avenues. Each type can be upgraded with the click of a button but you can't upgrade a street to an avenue due to the difference in size. So you can go from a lower density street to a higher one but not a street to an avenue. to do that you have to demolish the street and the surrounding development and then rebuild an avenue and rezone. They really make you think ahead with the planning. On a funny note, somehow I had a zombie outbreak (no joke!) and ended up with about 35 abandoned buildings. Just have to bulldoze the abandoned buildings and new ones will build. You can also do city specializations. Some cities are higher in resources than others such as coal, ore, oil and wind. You can then export those resources to other cities in the region. So if I have one city that uses a lot of coal powerplants but not much coal, I can import coal from another city. This can be very profitable if you are exporting a resource from one city to several others. Without a doubt the game has it's quirks and annoyances but overall I really think I am going to enjoy the hell out of it. That is all I can think of right now. Let me know if you guys that haven't played it have any other question. |

This is pretty cool. It was done during the Beta though.
1 hour build in 4 minutes |

Rage is starting to set in. I just tried to start playing and there is a fucking queue to get into the server I wanted to play on. Here is the best part, your cities are server specific! I can join a different server but I won't be able to continue on with what I started last night! Fucking lame. 20 minute queue to play now unless I use one of the European or Oceanic servers and start a new region and city.
