So I'm writing a paper for a class that's due tomorrow evening. The professor has made it very clear that he wants us to site internet sources in the paper, but he is also adamant about NOT having a bibliography. What is the best way to site the source while maintaining a clean look to the paper? The web address I need to site is very long and ugly when just using parenthisis. help? |
I'd go with footnotes, as suggested. Something like this:
putting a recognizable and manageable fragment of the address in the text, and the full address in the footnote. |

google for parenthetical notation. this is the standard for academic writing, replacind footnotes and endnotes. i forget the name of the current standard, but it has been amended to include how to properly cite online sources. if you are still unsure tomorrow afternoon, IM me and i'll call my sister, who just finished her undergrad thesis. she had several online sources, including a couple of bible-length URLs. i am unsure of the URL truncation rules, but i know that they exist. if you don't mind me bragging a bit, she also just graduated summa cum laude from UT-dallas, which has one of the best psych departments in the nation. |

Which format is it? Standard practice for MLA format if the URL is too long or complicated is: XDeath, Cody. "Siting a Source Without a Bibliography?" AR15.com. 2005. 15 Feb 2005 <http://www.ar15.com/>. Path: Discussion Forums; General Discussions; Siting a Source Without a Bibliography?. And here's MY 'Works Cited' for this post: Gibaldi, Joseph. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6th ed. New York: MLA, 2003. 207-216; 272-274. Lunsford, Andrea A. Easywriter. 2nd ed. Boston: St. Martin's, 2002. 180. If the required format is something other than MLA, then none of the above really applies. |
