Do I go out and murder it, or let it go?
The garage is stinkin' to high heaven. |

Quoted:
KILL IT! Winchester T-22 to the head. Quiet, accurate. But not too deadly, hence the need for head shot. No. No head shots. You want the critter to be able to scamper and limp away. Preferably to die somewhere else. A dead skunk in your property is a thousand times worse than one that just sprays and leaves. |

I've had a bad run in with a skunk. My dog decided it would be cute to pick a fight and then come running in through the dog door to tell me about it. If you think it stinks now, wait until it goes off. The smell will last for a VERY long time and just when you think it's finally gone, one humid day and the stink returns. That being said, I think you should chase it down and choke it to death with your hands. It's the only way. |

I expect it's under the shed, I couldn't find it. But there will be another night. Last year I let one raise a litter under the shed, but I don't think I'll do that this year. They always nest under something. If you really want to kill it––and not have it spray––catch it with a 220 Conibear trap. They are not the least bit trap shy, and are VERY easy to catch. They are nocturnal, so you can set the trap during the late afternoon, and you will have your dead skunk in the morning. |
| Unless you're leaving pet food outside, if you have skunks, you have rats or mice. It doesn't matter what you do with this particular skunk, another one, or a raccoon or two will take his place. Get rid of the skunk, and then start a rodent extermination regimen. |

Got sprayed by a skunk near my garage a year and some change ago. Pretty sure he was just wandering through.
Desperately wanted to shoot the little fucker. Clear shot, perfect backdrop... but figured it would just make life even more annoying when I had to move the body elsewhere and deal with the stench longer than necessary |

Let the fucker be. He ain't hurting nobody. |

Get rid of the skunk, and then start a rodent extermination regimen. I live in the country - no one will eliminate all the mice and voles. The cats kill at least one every day, but the snakes appear to be slacking. I've only had problems with mice indoors one time, and that was after I moved some stuff from my dad's shop here. The skunks don't bother me much, although I don't want them living under the shed or burrowing under the porch (which I stopped with 6 yards of mud pumped in). My wife hates the smell when it comes wafting into the house, so I have to listen to her whine a little. Probably ought to make her kill skunks herself. |

Shot a couple last year. Every time I shot them (head shot, body shot didn't matter) they released. Didn't smell to good for a few hours afterwords. Go and make nice with them. http://deesinbox.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/baby_skunks.jpg Rabies shots? At least they no longer use the ones in the abdomen, but it still takes around a dozen shots (fewer under some protocols based on testing of the dead animal). Untreated it is uniformly lethal. With treatment but no vaccine survival is possible, but still not a very high rate. |

We have skunks in our neighborhood, I just tell the kids to keep their distance. One surprised me while I was outside smoking in the twilight. Little guy, he walked 6 ft. in front of me before either of us saw the other. We both made a startled move, and he kept going. |

I live in the country, too, and I agree, you'll never get rid of all the rodents. But if you start obsessively trapping rats, you can make a dent in their population, and somewhat keep the nocturnal predators away. I'd rather have skunks than wood rats, though. |

If they are giving you a problem, get a live trap and wrap it up with a cardboard box.
Bait the trap with Jackson vanilla wafers (not Nilla - 9 out of 10 skunks prefer Jackson, this from a pro trapper friend) Haul them away from the house. Kill em' or not up to you. With the trap wrapped up they generally won't spray when you move them. |
|
Don't shoot it or it will stink to high heven, head shot or not.
Get a 55 gallon drum with one end open. Place a can of cheap tuna way towards the back. Place have a have a heart trap in drum in front of tuna. Next morning get up and back your car up to drum. Run shop vac hose from car muffler to drum. Throw blanket over the whole mess and go inside and have a cup of coffee. No smell, no mess, quick easy painless for all involved. |

| If you see one in daylight, killing it is a community service, it likely has rabies. If it's not rabid or cornered it will often try to run away, then you can either let it go, or kill it once its far enough from your home. A 12 gauge w/ BB goose shot seems to work well. |

I was trapping raccoons and opossums last summer in a live trap. They were getting in our trash and making a mess. After catching them I took them down near the river and released them. Then we started smelling skunk odor every once in a while and my wife asked me what I would do with a trapped skunk. I quit trapping. Better safe than sorry. AeroE, how about using mothballs under your shed to discourage them and make them move elsewhere? |

AeroE, how about using mothballs under your shed to discourage them and make them move elsewhere? You most likely only trapped ONE coon and ONE 'possum. Releasing them "down near the river" means they probably beat you home. Catching a skunk is no big deal––just approach the trap with a tarp held up, put it over the trap, and do as you wish. They will not spray, and yes I've done it several times with NO sprays. Compared to any other critter, you will be amazed how calm and unafraid a skunk is. They do not fear humans. |
