so who loves the good ole SBC? its ruggid, powerful, and cheap as hell to get a shit ton of power out of youtube.com/watch?v=uXdyEhRg8H4 pretttyy |
|
That depends on what you mean by "a shit ton of power". The SBC is obviously a perfect choice if you are on a budget, but for BIG power, you will still spend a lot of money. The faster you go, the more you will pay. For mild to moderate power levels, the SBC wins for hp per dollar, though. |
Agree - but the real strength of the SBC is ubiquity. The length of run has allowed GM to produce them cheap, durable and reliable (pretty much). Hard to beat a crate engine if your doing a swap - warranty, cheap, reasonably powerful. Tho they aint as cheap as they used to be just a few years ago, still a pretty good deal. Luck Alac |

I have two 4 bolt main 350's. Had a 283 and a 327 short block before. The sbc isn't the king of the hill it was a few years ago. Seems guys that want horsepower and stump pulling torque are going crate big blocks and the guys that want a power band from start to finish are going forced induction. you still can't beat the sound of a small block with headers, 3" exhaust and to much cam! |
Amen to that. I had a '68 SS Camaro with a 406, 2" Super Comps, 3 1/2" 2 chambers, 208 AFR heads, and a Comp 305 mag. She had 3.08 gears, and would lope doing 65 down the freeway. |

Honestly all the LS based stuff is pretty cheap now and that motor is clearly better in every way. I'm all done with old school SBC stuff. A stock aluminum LS block with stock crank, and just aftermarket pistons/rods and ARP hardware will do 1500+hp. It's really incredible how good those engines are and how plentiful they are. Pretty much every rear wheel drive GM vehicle built in the last 6-7 years has one. |
I used to think big blocks were the end all of torquey, reliable engines. Then I discovered the Cummins 6BT. ![]() There is no reason to even bother with big block gassers any more. |
500 inches is 500 inches, the block itself doesnt matter |
500 c.i. SBC? The block absolutely matters. Here's a hint (water jackets) |
siamese cylinder, 511ci capable, 4.250 max bore, iron, 2500hp capable. it was designed for it=). if you can get 500 ci reliably, the block itsellf doesnt matter |
Thats the kicker. |
