I need a small good welder, thickest thing I'll be welding is 1/4 inch sheet. Smaller the better.

Hobarts got some nice ones.. get a 220 volt the duty cycle is a bit longer.

I got one that works for me that is about 5' tall. Is that small enough?

I've got a Lincoln SP-135 plus. Mig welder.

The Miller, millermatic 200 is a good small machine, lots of muffler shops use them, sometimes you can find trade ins.

I have a Hobar Handler 120v mig welder...been using it for 10 years now and love it. No problems whatsoever.

Can be used with shielding gas, or with self shielding wire.

I paid around $600 for it if IRRC, not sure what they go for now.

Millermatic 175

its a 220 volt mig that welds up to 1/4 inch. I have one and like it.

DO NOT get a cheapie!!
Make sure it is set up for gas and parts are readily replaceable.

I have a Hobart Handler 135 (110V) that works very well.
Will do 3/16 single pass, so 1/4" will work with a little extra prep
or another pass.

Only typical downsides are: low duty cycle and voltage drop if you're
using too small an ext. cord...get a huge one!!

I think the newest models sqeeze a few more amps out.

I just bought a new Millermatic 251 off the internet for 1799.00 Free shipping from the factory. It arrived in 3 days. The equivalent Lincoln was 2300.00.

If you only need it for 4 hours, just head to the tool rental store and rent one. My expierence is the cheap ones cause frustration the isn't necc. and the expensive ones are ...well....expensive.

That's a good deal John, i paid close to that for a new 200 /w/ a spot/ stitch panel long ago.[the late 80's]
