What kind of smoker do you smokers use. I'm looking at Propane or Charcoal is one better than the other?

Just have the basic Brinkman R2D2 shaped smoker that uses charcoal.   Gonna have to smoke some ribs during football season.

I have this one as well.  A good cheap way to find out if you enjoy smoking food before investing in a more expensive unit.

i have a big green egg which is awesome but the brinkman r2d2 is good to start out on.  do yourself a favor and use natural lump charcoal not briquettes. forget propane.

Also, if you end up getting the Brinkmann, google the mods for it.

They are worth doing and make it easier to use.

Kind of depends ... what you are going to cook, and how long..... wood is preferred, propane, then electric.
You'll wind up screwing around trying to keep the temp correct with wood more than propane.
You'll wind up screwing around trying to keep the temp correct with propane more than electric if there is any wind at all.

I've got this one... next time I'm going electric....
2 reasons: The temp is easier to keep constant with a thermostat, and because 12 - 14 hours on propane ( cooking a brisket ) burns about 3/4 of a 20 pound tank.

ETA: This " box " type smoker lends itself - for modification into a dehydrator if you like to make jerky... I cut a square section in the front of mine and added a small electric heater... works very well.
I'll find a pic and add on...

Weber 22.5" bullet. It does 99% of what a homeowner needs, and it does it very easily. Minon method makes it super easy. Literally set up and check once an hour.

If you can afford a big green egg, that would be preferable because it is the best grill out there as well.

You will always get better flavor with natural lump or wood charcoal than you will gas and electric. Kingsford charcoal is terrible at best.

Brinkman with the Mesquite briquettes and wet hickory or mesquite chips.

I have the Bradley electric.

Temp is always good within a few degrees, regardless of weather conditions.  I bought the one with the digital readout.  You just set it for how long you want it to smoke, how long you want it to cook, and what temp you want it at and you're good to go.

Wood is nice, but you have to be able to devote your day to sticking close by to it and monitoring things.  I like to be able to set mine up and go about my life.

Propane dries everything out too much, in my opinion.

Venison Jerky causes fights among my neighbors.

+1

Unless I've got a lazy day planned, I am using my electric smoker.
