It appears to be a prairie rattler subspecies.
Rattlelink They don't get real big. |

I have stepped on two already this year. I have seen 5 total within 4 feet of me. I haven't killed any of them.
Hell, the only one that even scared me was the big one I stepped on. Something about the ground wriggling under your boot that will give you the willies. Only one was poisonous - a small copper head that I also stepped on. I kicked him off the trail when he started moving towards my dog and kept on going. |

Yes, it is a Prairie Rattle snake, I live on the Front Range of Colorado just south of Denver. This trail is in my neighborhood and is about 6,500 elevation. I just used my bike to push him off of the trail, way off. He wasn't bothering anyone and he really wanted to get out of the way. No reason to kill him, besides, I don't normally carry when I go mountain biking. As far as rattle snakes go, prairie rattle snakes are pretty mellow. Well, at least compared to the rattle snakes I encountered when I lived in Texas. Those Texas rattle snakes seem to be born mad. |

Glad to hear you didn't kill em, but I thought he was dead in the pic. |

A rain storm was blowing in and the temperature changed from upper 80's down into the 60's over about an hour. The little guy was not moving very fast, I was quite happy about that. |

Paging badgers http://razboynik13.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/hb4.jpg nom nom nom..... Honey badger don't give a fuck |
| The only snakes that die in my AO are the pygmy rattlers. Those fuckers like to coil up in the corner of the front porch next to my door and wait. I have 2 young kids. The pygmys will die every time. Now the rat snakes, et al that live in the yard are GTG. Cool little fuckers although my rabbit population is much lower than it used to be. |
| While I will admit, I HATE snakes. I wont kill one unless it appears to threaten me and mine.... I have a stupid fear of them.... But I do understand there are some snakes that are better then others. My Example |
