Bullsnake

This time of year they eat the mice and gophers out by the barn.

They shake their tail like a rattlesnake when you move them or bother them.

They are good snakes to have around

That is not the proper nomenclature.
It is a copper-headed water-rattler.

ETA: I was thinking Great Plains Rat, but it looks more like a bullsnake as I look at pictures.

Unless it played dead and/or puffed up (Hognose) at some point while you were standing over it,  I would say its a bull snake based on its markings.

It's a Pituophis for  certain.

  I do not understand the mentality of some on here who can identify 37 varieties of AR-15 magazine by sight but don't bother to learn what animals live around them and say retarded shit like "it's a snake,kill it".

Wouldn't it need to be;

Allow me to correct your erroneous comment Sir.
It is known as a copper mouthed rattle moccasin!
Informally referred to as a snek or danger noodle!
