Non-poisonous but looks like he needed to be put down.. Sadly. Done. Beautiful snake. I've never seen one before, nore have I seen a copperhead. Someone said that's what it was, but I couldn't tell by looking at images on my phone. Thanks for the replies. |

Right? If it doesn't have a rattle on its tail, it MUST be a Copperhead! Unless it's within 100ft of water, then it's a Water Moccasin! Quoted:

Poor guy sucks he got mangled from the front end loader. I teach my boy to love them and identify snakes, we are always upset when they get smashed or lawnmower man.
Im the guy that stops traffic to pick up snakes and get them out of harms way, people give me the "your crazy eye" when carrying 5-6' momma black snake. |

Sorry, it's not worth the chance. It could have been a coralsnake. |

Non-venomous beneficial rat snake. Prepare to be overrun by rodents if you routinely kill them off. I would rather have the snakes, rodents are a much worse vector for lymes disease than deer are. It was unintentional. I said routinely, mainly for the benefit of the uneducated douchebags who believe that the only good snake is a dead snake. Yours was an accident. It sucks, but it is what it is. |

Rat snakes can have quite the attitude. One of my dogs was barking at the sliding glass door that goes to the deck 10 feet off the ground. There was a rat snake striking at the glass from the outside. Lots of nonvenomous snakes have grumpy temperaments. I've had large king snakes strike at me if I got within 5 feet. Coachwhips can be pretty bittey as well. |

Quoted: Standard MO for a rat snake. I usually catch a few each year around my house. Cripes, they're grouchy! Quoted: Quoted: Looks pissed! Standard MO for a rat snake. I usually catch a few each year around my house. Cripes, they're grouchy! |

interesting, I catch them here very often, most times they are timid. I've only been bitten once and it was kind of my fault, I grabbed him bare handed too far behind the head and he was able to turn and get me. Didnt know I was there either, right at dusk so I'm sure I scared the shit of it. Quoted:

OP, get used to that - they are REALLY common in southern OH. Copperheads have much more well-defined markings. I threw a rat snake just like the one in your picture out of my kitchen about a month ago. They do a good job of controlling the mouse population. Spotted a rattlesnake earlier this summer, wasn't too happy about that. |

I caught this little guy will cutting grass last weekend. I jumped off the tractor and grabbed him about mid way down his body so he couldn't get away. He didn't seem to care, and other than bumping me with a closed mouth didn't offer much resistance. http://i57.tinypic.com/2zgatqv.jpg Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Looks pissed!
