I was at our local shooting area and decided to climb into some rocks. It has been real cool here, but this day was warmed up real good, almost 80deg.

I thought to myself "Watch for snakes" and as soon as it went through my head I heard it!

Frickin rattler right under me about 4 feet away! It scared the living crap out of me, and was coiled up real good with it's head in the strike position. I must have walked right over it.

Pulled the 9XD SC, and gave it one shot. Almost cut its head off, and it pumped what looked like all the blood in its body onto the ground in less then 10 seconds.

This is going to get good.

Let me ask, though, did you get hit by any rock or metal fragments with ricochets at that close range?

Poor snattle rake.  I love snakes.  As pets, as interesting wildlife, as a main course -- they're good for everything!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Good shot. The Sierra Clubbers here will be along shortly to chastise you for killing the poor creature. Happened to me when I posted this pic a while back...

Beautiful snakes but I would have shot too based on how poisonous they are and the fact that they blend in so well that I'd likely have been startled shitless.   Whenever I'm startled I resort to the typical "shoot first ask questions later" mindset.

Excellent work.  I hate snakes.  Even more so when they're on a plane.

seriously,  if you've never tried rattlesnake before that one looks big enough to be worth it.  just gut, skin and filet the meat off the bones,  fry in butter with some salt, pepper and maybe just a touch of lemon.  serve with mashed potatoes, cornbread, and carrot sticks.

...at least that's how i did the last one i got.

I'm all for killing snakes, but if it was a shot at solid rock, I think I would have found a rock and killed it the old fashioned way just to be safe.

Good shot. I did the same to a moccasin 3-4 months ago. Ignore the bullshit. Good shot.

The rock was in my mind for sure, I just got my gun lined up, and then closed both eyes as much as I could while still seeing the front sight. I didn't get any fragments from it at all.

The snake died instently! All the other snakes I have killed would move around for a LONG time after the fact.

Now thats interesting,  I've never seen them so dark and pronounced.  The ones we have around here are almost faded-out looking by comparision.  What part of the country was this?

You'll get no crap from me ( snake lover ).  I'll kill a rattler when I come accross them if I know I'm in a place where other people go.   If I'm in an out of the way area I'll just admire them and walk around.

Last year I threw 3 of them off the runway in the early moring,  when it's cold they are SLOOOOW.  My students always look at me funny when I tell them to stop the plane so I can get out and move the rattle snake.

I ain't eating anything that eats rats, because by doing so, I am indirectly eating rats - unless I am in a SHTF situation, then I probably would.

I was at my parents house a few weeks ago looking at a sunflower and all of a sudden the leaves started rustling below me.  About scared me poopless.

I'm pretty sure it was non-poisonous but if I would have had a gun it would have been very dead.

Several weeks before that I did kill a copperhead in the driveway that thier GSD was holding at bay for me to come out and dispatch.
