I'm well into "Gangster Hunters" by John Oller. This is the story of the birth of the FBI in the mid-1930's motor bandit days. Most books on this period are about the gangsters like Dillinger, Karpis, Baby Face Nelson, and others. This one is about the agents who hunted them, and Hoover. It becomes apparent that the corruption of the FBI began early on with wire tapping and interrogation by beatings, but to be fair it was while a bunch of college kids were suddenly faced with gun fights with brutal and murderous killers armed with automatic weapons. It's also apparent that the corruption was entirely J. Edgar Hoover's doing in a drive to build a powerful agency under his complete control. |

I just finished the Transdimensional Hunter series by John Ringo and Lydia Sherrer. https://www.baen.com/into-the-real.html I tore through the first 2 novels and am waiting on the 3rd one. Definitely recommend. Basically the main character plays FPS games and is VERY good. She gets asked to beta a new augmented reality game. Great read in the vein of Ender's game, would highly recommend. |

The End of Everything Series by Christopher Artinian. Audio book, so far about 2 1/2 hours in the first one and its pretty good for a young adult book and a nice change from a hardcore explicit zombie book. Actually I didn't even realize its a "Young Adult" book at first. It's about two sisters surviving a Zombie Apocalypse and since I have three daughters I can really relate to the characters interactions. The narrator is female and British and pretty good and a nice change. |

All my “reading” is audiobooks these days - a great way to pass the time while commuting to work and the only time I really have free to enjoy books. I’m currently listening to this one: Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich Everyone knows that Hitler was surviving on a cocktail of injections as his war went downhill, and I’d always heard rumors about the SS and their drug-infused rituals, but I didn’t know that much of the German military and a large part of German society had embraced meth and other narcotics. Their blitzkrieg warfare was sustained by soldiers who stayed awake for days at a time, supercharged on meth. It’s both disturbing and fascinating how their doctors didn’t really understand the longterm effects of the drugs but handed it out like candy to fuel their troops. |

Many of today's deadly drugs were invented by early 1900's German chemists. As the title has it, the 1930's German people were high, usually on Meth. They even had a meth candy so a housewife could get a little lift during the day. The incredible Blitz....Because the troops were high on meth and could go without sleep, and had feelings of being invincible. When they had supply problems in the East, they made their own in the field. Known today as "The Nazi method". People have wondered why Hitler deteriorated later in the war and became paranoid and felt omnipotent. That's because among other drugs he was loaded on Meth. All symptoms of a Meth addict any cop can describe. |

I'd be interested in what others thought about it. I did read her Surprise, Kill, Vanish, that was a good read. I also have Operation Paperclip sitting on my shelf that I intend to read soon. |

Stephen Hunter's The Day Before Midnight is also excellent I thought. Currently starting The Mercy of Gods, the first of a new series by the Expanse writing duo known as James S.A. Corey. I had my nerd card revoked at work when the marketing lady (!) asked me what I thought of the new book, and here I didn't even know there was one  . We had talked Expanse before since she spied my Tachi mug.

She still has his WWI 1911. Since there are audible credits just sitting around I think I’ll listen to her aunt Lena’s book. It’s well over 100 years old with brittle pages that I don’t want to damage. Wish I could’ve met her. She was beautiful and lived a cool life. She had tuberculosis, but apparently it’s nowhere near as contagious or debilitating as the fear mongering media would have you believe.
