A friend of the family died in Dec but the hospital transposed the date of death from 12/10 to 10/12 and SS reached into the account where her monthly check was deposited and took out 2 payments. When her daughter tried to get it corrected they told her not to bother them and that it would take quite a while to correct it. Might be a good idea to deposit the check in one account and then transfer it to another so if you are pre-maturely declared dead you will not be sitting in poverty courtesy of the SS and being told to be patient. |

Get the hosipital to fix their error - and have Social Security follow suit. Money should be the least of the families worries at a time like this. It's also good advice to clear out any bank safety deposit boxes as the government likes to take a look at them before turning them over to the estate. [edited to add:] You have always failed when you set yourself up to rely on the government for your well being. |

Unfortunately money is one of the biggest things most families HAVE to worry about at a time like this. Between the ridiculously high cost of burying someone and the fact alot of people dont have adequate life insurance a death in the family can sometimes be just aa big a monetary hardship as it is an emotional one. |
| The lesson here is to avoid all that linkup crap. If you give them a link, they can do what they just did. If you got paper checks, and deposited them wherever, they would have to keep demanding repayment but could not really do anything about it. Let them take you to court. A judge wouldn't like to hear of that exchange from the SSA. |
