Im no expert, but I have a pair of underarmour that I wear hiking and camping that are GREAT. Not too padded, but they keep your feet dry better than natural materials (yes, I understand its the desert, but they will still sweat.)

can always throw a pair of cotton over them at night.

FOX RIVER COOLMAX SOCKS!!!  I used these in Iraq and they are the best socks I've owned by far.  I've owned Thorlo's and those make your feet sweet and blow out in a year.  I am still wearing my FOX RIVER COOLMAX SOCKS almost two years later.  They wick away sweat, easy to wash and are quick drying.  The HK of socks!

Which type of Fox River socks?  I did a search and there are several types of white socks.  Brigade Quartermaster has two types that appear to look like the black socks we are issued.  Do you remember which style you had?

SmartWool Light Hikers. The tan color even closely matches issue tan gear.

SmartWool is the ubersock. They caress your feet in buttery-soft merino wool and prevent hot-spots and blisters. They don't make you sweat overly much, but wool will keep you warm even when wet.

I wore SmartWool everyday in Iraq for three months and my socks held up really well. I'm taking the same eight pairs back over there with me the end of this month.

SmartWool: your feet will thank you.

I haven't been to Iraq (scheduled to be deployed in a few months) but i prefer Gold Toe Tropical socks. They're the most comfortable i've worn.

Thor-los.  I have four pairs that I have been wearing for about two years straight on active duty.  They are nowhere near wearing out.   They keep my feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  Couldn't ask for more.

A wise man once told me, "Buy quality, pay once. Buy cheap and pay again and again."

Great advice. Thanks Dad.

Tayous, those are the hikers, not the light hikers that Jarhead22 recommended. I'm guessing that they are heavier. The do have the Light Hikers for $11.50 a pair from that same company. Good bird dogging though. How did you find that deal? Did you do a Google search?

I have the same eight pair of ThorLo military boot socks that I had when I arrived in April and that had been worn prior to coming here. I think they're a great sock, but I do plan on ordering some of the Smartwools and giving them a try out.

They also have the lightweight ones to for $11.25 same deal. I just typed in Smartwool socks and up came that web site. www.sportsmerchants.com/smlihiso.html

+1 on smartwool light hikers. Irregardless of what you wear, your feet will sweat. Wool is advantageous in this situation because it dries quickly and doesn't retain as much moisture as cotton. Bring as many sets as you can and change them often. Stay away from cotton as it retains moisture (think blisters).

You're always limited in as far as how much snivel gear you can pack for the trip over. I suggest you do what I did and pack a box with all the extras you need (socks, drink mix, extra skivvies, etc) and mail it to yourself (your APO address) just before you leave. That way, when you get to the sandbox, your package of snivel gear won't be far behind. Sure beats humping it....

The problem I have with the Thorlo socks is that they feel to thick on my feet. They also made my feet sweat really bad. We have them all over base for about $10 or so a pair I use to have a few pair but after SOI I lost them all.

Not old. Just lucky enough to have gone to Iraq for two tours..Don't worry, as I didn't figure it out the first time either. It took a second trip to the sandbox for me to figure out I can mail my snivel gear in lieu of humping it....

I really like the Wigwam INgenious socks. I wore the thick boot socks throughout the summer with no problems. They are the only socks I will wear from now on, they aren't cheap but they wear like iron.

I don't do the trifecta until JAN-06, so I'm good for about a year....
