My wife bought a new HD digital vid camcorder, did'nt even think about it's compatibility with our computer.  It did'nt come with any software except what's on the camera.  I have Windows Movie Maker, Win Media Player, Cyberlink DVD Suite, and Nero 7 Essentials.  The camera records in the MP4 format, and I can't get any of those programs to even open the files.  I was hopeing it would be as easy as a digital camera, but alas it's just making me want to throw it against the wall.
Can you guys recommend some decent software for the damn thing?  It's just for home movies.  I would really, really appreciate it, before I use a 2 pound hammer on it!  Thanks!

Not sure what version of Win u are using, but you need the Codec for Windows media player.

try this from microsofts download sight.  It looks like the free download incorporates mpeg4 formats for Quicktime.

Or try the prepackaged codec set here. That should take care of 99% of any codec issues (if you keep it up to date).

I use Sony Vegas and it is an option in the open menu.  You can try a free trial.  The cheapest one is under $50:

I downloaded a free converter program called format factory. I convert my mp4 into wmv and use movie maker to edit the movies. Its fast and easy.

Thanks guys, that Format Factory is easy, my retarded ass had it figured out pretty quick.
jvic, I downloaded the free trial, I only had about 10 minutes to look at it, and it seems kinda complicated.........now this is from a guy that's never done any of this before.  Is it fairly easy to get familiar with?
