This individual hasn't been on the site in a few years, but I did email them.

Is anybody else doing solar power mods for eotechs?  It seems like a great idea. I would certainly pay $100 to have mine modified, if it can do what twl claims.

For sure.  And if any of you tech savvy folks can come up with something, I think this would make an outstanding kickstarter project.

Now someone needs to come up with a UV light mod for gun safes.

I remember this.  Very interesting idea.  Definitely let us know if you get in touch with the inventor.  If it could be done without compromising the water proofing I would be interested in one.

Here's a pic I found of the original setup on the linked thread.

Serious question - If it could extend the life of a battery to weeks of patrolling (or indefinite) instead of a new battery every few days/week of heavy use would that be a stupid idea?

I would pay $100 for that provided it was reliable and durable.

I have a 516 which is a cr123 model though.

This mod still uses batteries.  The little solar panel is basically just a charger for the batteries.

It seems that the battery compartment would be the easiest part to mod, as it is a replaceable component.
Not the best place for the panel, but you aren't compromising the Eothingy's seal or warranty.

This is one reason why this is a stupid idea. The size of that solar panel won't make enough of a difference in battery life.

Yes, considering if someone is going to be out patrolling for any amount of time, they will already be carrying batteries for their radios, lasers, other optics, flashlights, etc.

Yes and if your optic is on for extended periods what's bad about making a battery last many times longer?  Not saying it's the best idea ever and I agree I'd be inclined to do Aimpoint but if it turns a 50 hour battery into a 500 hour battery is that bad?

That won't work. That's powerfilm and at that size I doubt it is pushing more than 30ma at 3v. Enough to charge a single cell, in 40 hours. Lol.

Would be enough to charge a LiOn 3v 123 even with ambient light, but it would take some time. If you are using the Eotech occasionally and your rifle was exposed to this light, it should be able to keep it topped off. It won't run it continually unless you were in full daylight and used the lower brightness settings. The power requirements for an older 512 are pretty modest and would think the EPS line would be less? not sure...:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_18/358617_.html#

I guess if your goal is to keep it always in ready condition so as to never worry about the battery, it could be done. But not constantly turned on unless you had a much bigger flexible panel...

The EXPS3-0/SU-231a is already replacing the older 553/SU-231 in service, and they have a reported 600hr continuous battery life at setting 12, so bumping an older Eotech from 50-500hrs isn't as big a concern anymore.

600hrs is 25 days of straight use on the optic. Batteries in lights, lasers, NVGs, etc never last that long in my experience.

The auto shut off feature the EXPS3-0 has is programmable for 4-8hrs, which will make batteries last longer.

CR-123a batteries about 0.6oz each. That's barely over half an ounce. I don't think that kind of weight will make or break me.

Wind turbines. You guys are hilarious. Seriously.

Sounds like someone has a turbine stuck up his rear most parts.. pipe down old chap.

Looking at my XPS3 here... I'm pondering a question... can I get rid of that damn automatic shutoff?  I don't care if I leave the damn thing on, it's SUPPOSED to be on... hence why my Eotechs both live in the safe, and the Aimpoint PRO lives on my HD rifle.

That damn auto shutoff is the one thing that always made me like Aimpoint more... well that and battery life, but one cannot have everything (until Aimpoint comes out with a holographic sight too, or EO comes WAY up in the battery life department.)

He'd do better battery switching, and charging one while it's discharging the other. Unsure if the EOTech runs off serial or parallel with its battery packs although I suppose it's parallel due to the increased battery life. 1 panel would be enough to charge one battery while the other discharges, or it could run itself off the panel during the day/charge while off.  Either way one of those powerfilms is pretty weaksauce when it comes to current.
